When white seems right

The power of wearing white! So easy to recognize....think...a doctors lab coat, the cricketers uniform, the blushing bride...However, back in the day ('the day' being the 16th century), white was typically worn by French Queens representing mourning. It was not until Mary Queen of Scots married her first husband, she chose white as she felt it was her most flattering colour. And why not; it's bright, it's fresh and it goes with everything. Which is why diamonds are a girls best friend!

Image

I have a tendency to want to scotch guard myself (is that still a product?) when wearing white. However, why should the fear of stains hold us back? After all there are multiple stain removing methods and products. My favourite among them is this:  Merely hold the spot of your garment tightly over a bowl, carefully pour boiling water over the stain and watch it drip out of the fibers and into the bowl. This method works with wine, juice and berry stains. Love this, as there are no chemicals. So go forth and immerse yourself in white (and have another glass of Merlot)!

Mavi Adrianna glam white rinse $118 now at $89

This is just an utter show stopper! Just a breath of extra layer, with gorgeous embroidery detail. Wear it with destroyed jeans or even a tank dress. Just a few of many possibilities.

Cream sheer embroidered blouse $79

Image

Maybe a fresh crisp blouse is your preference. White offers so many possibilities as, it's like a blank slate, adding colours is a total breeze. With the lovely detailing here, it still offers the possibility of just wearing it as is. Or build on the vintage look of the eyelet!

Cream Zina pintuck blouse $99

Because mosquito's would have more access to your beautiful skin, is no reason to pass up this great sweater. Just slightly out of the ordinary with slight open work giving that little extra something.

French Connection sweater (black or white) $68

White is kind of the 'smile' of the colour palate, people just naturally give you a head tilt and lighten up when you sport a bit of white, be it a big toothy grin, a diamond (yes please) or a garment. So don't be afraid of white, it's the colour of comforting things, our pillows, sugar for our tea or Gramma's hair.

Plum and Big Sisters...you could win a $350 gift certificate...details here

I've been presented lately with quite a number of 'would you rather' questions from my 10 year old. And NEITHER is no more accepted as an option than it is on a voter card (sadly)! So I thought up my own 'would you rather'...Would I rather spend one night in a castle, in an exotic location with full facilities and unparalleled views.....or find the perfect dress? Maybe the 'one night' seems like a slam dunk...however every year at this time, I find myself in search of the dress as if it would totally make my life complete. It seems a dress in a woman's wardrobe is often like the suit jacket to a man. Although, we usually like to have many and we don't only wear them to the office. Plum absolutely excels at dresses.

Image

Isn't this the sweetest thing since chocolate dipped donuts? And nicer to wear! So nicely designed, with pockets, slight A-line, flattering length, beautifully fitted with slight stretch and slight stretch lining.

Simone sleeveless A-line dress (black or white print) $135

ImageImage

Unquestionably a print that declares clearly that spring is here. Blossoms throughout, this dress is yet another fresh, easy wear...with pockets, unlined with a delightfully feminine back view.

Simone A-line dress with pockets (aqua, navy/cream, or pink) $129

Image

This is such a hot little, knit, pull on, dress, showing 'just' enough...to create come intrigue and unless you're Melania Trump with a private audience with the Pope, you can probably afford to be a little bit daring.

French Connection Ottoman crepe knit dress (fuschia) $158

Image

On the lighter, more casual, less structured side, is this pretty blue, denim, embroidered style. Made from 100% cotton, a comfortable, breathable wear for the seasons to come.

Ellison embroidered dress (denim) $79

Image

Another casual denim dress, which can switch to being worn as a tunic or just a light cover with capri tights. Made from the, emerging in popularity fabric, Tencel (lyocell), a great sustainable fibre, comprised of wood cellulose...very similar to rayon in it's fluidity.

Etherial tencel dress (denim blue) $79

Life is full of so many choices...should I have the salad or a nice thick burger, should I marry the artist my family thinks is a bum or the computer geek? Just remember though, that even 'not' making a choice...is still a choice. So don't just sit there, dresses are waiting to be chosen (if you don't choose them someone else will)!

So many dresses...so little time

Breaking free!

Plum and Big Sisters...you could win a $350 gift certificate...details here

The blog title is taken from a book loaned to me. One that is not unlike the old children's 'board books' but for adults, consisting of only two pages per chapter, including some inspiring quotes, yet hardly requiring a large time investment to complete. The premise?...relax! Chill out, find YOU in the chaos of life. Find ways to relax yourself, mind body and soul. That might mean breaking out of your regular patterns from time to time if you feel stuck or bored. Maybe you're not into yoga though, heck maybe you don't even like yoga pants. Plum presents fashions that help dial down the crazy that is your life by providing many relaxed styles that don't mimic pajamas.

Image

With this look, yet another way to look cool, be cool...feel cool! Hardly anything complex about her look. Hair up, one simple necklace and a comfortable, embroidered lace sleeves, cotton knit top with an easy, 100% linen skirt. Linen being the very definition of cool! Footwear? Try some cut out, open toe wedges or espadrilles. (more linen coordinates can be found online and instore).

French Connection lace and knit top (white) $68

Plum skirt with curved hem (concrete, natural or olive) $72

Image

So pretty and light like a kiss into the air! If you're not really a red person, that's ok. It's more of a natural, clay like shade! If you're into muted colours or basics, this just gives your outfit a bit of punch without a lot of effort.

Cream Vicky print kimono (Marsala red) $59

ImageImage

This little cutie is a great, simple stripe tank dress that can be worn back to front or front to back. V-neck or scoop neck. Very easy to pair with leggings or on it's own, to just chill or, throw on a kimono or jean jacket when there is a chill!

Orb reversible tie waist dress (black stripe) $77

Image

So, 'I want to try something different...new' you say....The above sweater might be far enough out of your comfort zone with some key features, making it stand out from the ordinary. Beautiful sweeping variegated hem, fringe, crochet and fresh white interspersed with a touch of natural beige. Quite an interesting design. Nice with your favourite distressed jeans.

Cream Albertina cardigan (84% cotton) (off white) $99

According to this book, relaxing, being happier and getting closer to the you, that is you does not mean you must drive like 'Starsky and Hutch' across town to get to your yoga class...what it does mean is...stop, look around you, take a breath, buy yourself some flowers or pick some, excavate an old artistic talent or try a new one...or simply park the devices for a few hours...after all, there's no GPS that's going help you find you!

*(20% is off one regular price item only)

So valued is the Mother/daughter relationship, yet does not always consist of 'a Mother and daughter'...think...big sister/little sister, best friends, older cousin/younger cousin, aunts and nieces. Thinking back...by the time I was 19 years old and going for my first big job interview, my mother loaned me one of her dresses.  Despite the many many decades age and style gap, she managed to help me look, more like a grown up, ready for a job, woman. Today we are so fortunate; with a multitude of styles that seamlessly cross over the generations. (It's no longer required that a 50 year old, look...50)...current styles are more ageless.  And Plum is THE place where there is no gap; the place for multigenerational shopping where you will both find styles to suit your unique personalities.

Image

What do these lovely women have in common? It's not their size, height or age....other than they're mother and daughters, they all shop at Plum. Our society has become far more ageless, and our fashions reflect that. Although personally, I stay away from mini skirts. But that's just me!

PLUM DRESSES

Image

Don't waste your time raiding your mother's closet, just go shopping with her instead. Saves having to explain where 'it' went. Above are some very professional styles; jackets that can move from office, event, meetings to weekend wear, with a bit of tweaking.

PLUM JACKETS

Image

These are not 'MOM JEANS' these are jeans that will fit your Mom, (or aunt, or cousin)! Current denim styles suit and fit everyone. They're designed to look great and fit to accommodate a 'real' body and movement. Note the raw, unfinished hem, and harem style work for everyone!

PLUM DENIM

What is your Mother's best quality? Mother's often possess so many wonderful qualities, hard to pick only one. My Mother's middle eastern heritage meant we enjoyed many wonderful meals, she had enviable full lips, that made Molly Ringwald look like Paul Ryan and her love of fashion meant she had quite a charming collection of interesting hats (to name a mere few). If you're a Mother and you haven't introduced your daughter to Plum, what are you waiting for? After all, you're the Mom...the original 'know it all'(and we love that)!

Noticed...but not for your speech!

Weddings, the place where two wonderful souls come together to promise things no sane CEO would willingly put their signature on! Really not your worry though. However, what if you've been asked to give a speech? Think about what to say, or...perhaps more challenging, things not to say! Such as: talking about the parade of boyfriends leading up to the groom, how no one was fond of the groom until now or how inebriated you are, remember, there's probably a microphone in front of you! So, do yourself a favor, find 'the' dress and be as unforgettable as the bride (and yes, that's ok):

Image

As with the bridesmaid's dress...one hates the idea of a 'one of' occasion dress. This is not such a dress. It's incredibly sweet and flirty looking, fresh and easy to dress it down for the days and regular occasions to come.

Simone open shoulder floral dress (blue or red) $129

Image

Bouquet tossing is a hundreds of years old tradition, that stemmed originally from female attendee's attempting to obtain pieces of the bride's dress and flowers in the hopes of receiving some of her luck. In which case, you may want to be able to jump and stretch when the bouquet is tossed...or dance! I have seen this sweet dress on my co-worker and it's just breathtakingly beautiful.

Simone floral empire waist dress (ivory/pink or silver/multi) $175

Image

Here's a delightful dress that would be wonderful if you're needing to travel for the wedding. Packs up so easily and being a dotted print, can co-ordinate with multiple different types of accessories. Try it with a string of pearls, a locket or something bright red.

Simone sleeveless dress with back sheering (black/white or blue) $129

Image

Unforgettable comes in all shapes and sizes. Maybe you'd prefer something a little more uptown and edgy. Give this one a go and put your own spin on it. Try some absolutely to die for shoes, especially if you plan on displaying some fancy footwork on the dance floor...and a knock out bold statement necklace.

Simone shift dress with back pleat (black or salmon) $139

Image

Another sweet fresh spring option. Pockets for those of us nervous types, just above the knee and perfect neckline.

Simone sleeveless A-line dress (black or white print) $135

Weddings can make some of us very anxious, from the traditional church ceremonies with the unfamiliar reverent actions required, finding the appropriate gift to making small talk with people we barely know....But, don't forget, if all else fails, there may be vodka...looks like water but much more fun!

If you have something to say or a cause to support, it's commonplace to put it on a t shirt. And why not, that's a lot of blank space to be used! This is not new, the first graphic t's were army issue back in the 40's or perhaps earlier, the 'Wizard of Oz' t shirts used to promote the film. Graphic t's then skyrocketed to popularity in the 50's and 60's when bands caught on to their promotional appeal. And, who can forget George Michael's 1984 iconic 'Choose Life' t shirt. BUT, no need to be so serious. Plum has a wonderful selection with a much more light hearted take made by Bear Dance. They're silly, often feature some of our favourite pets and fit so well. Let's explore them and a few ideas on what to wear with them:

Image

This is assuming your cat can't read, otherwise this is a great way to get on your cat's bad side! But who cares, it's for your amusement not theirs. Love how it's worn above with camo pants, after all, don't forget black and white are viewed as neutrals. Don't be afraid to mix things up!

Bear Dance cat and book (grey or ivory) $35

Mavi Juliette cargo pant (military green) $118

ImageImage

Maybe sass up the silly of this 'chicken doing yoga', with a pair of tuxedo jeans. With the addition of the 'don't-mess-with-me' heels', I'd say this is a fun Friday night outfit!

Bear Dance chicken doing yoga (black) $35

Dish skinny tuxedo jean (black) $124

Image Image
Image

Here are three pieces that work well together. If you work in a somewhat relaxed environment, these pieces work because they balance each other out and there are no pattern clashes.

Bear Dance 'I work hard' t shirt (black) $35

Look gingham check scarf $39

Tobias jacket with elastic back (blue/cream or cream/black) $189

ImageImage

And who doesn't love 'little red' staring down the big bad wolf! Another way to wear your graphic t...tuck it into a skirt, add a belt and a simple cardigan add a bit of red lipstick and you're ready to go!

Bear Dance wolf and riding hood (heather grey) $35

Orb pencil skirt (black, or heather grey) $55

Plum has plenty of seriously comical images to choose from. Find the ones that suit you. They're also great as gifts.

So, maybe if we have something to say, we can possibly use Facebook, blogs, Twitter, or back in the day, we used that low tech thing above our chin... maybe we can save the t shirts for, light hearted, funny, silly...provoking smiles and fun conversations...not more arguments. Because, well...we now have a new world leader that can do that for us!
