When white seems right

Follow

The power of wearing white! So easy to recognize....think...a doctors lab coat, the cricketers uniform, the blushing bride...However, back in the day ('the day' being the 16th century), white was typically worn by French Queens representing mourning. It was not until Mary Queen of Scots married her first husband, she chose white as she felt it was her most flattering colour. And why not; it's bright, it's fresh and it goes with everything. Which is why diamonds are a girls best friend!

I have a tendency to want to scotch guard myself (is that still a product?) when wearing white. However, why should the fear of stains hold us back? After all there are multiple stain removing methods and products. My favourite among them is this:  Merely hold the spot of your garment tightly over a bowl, carefully pour boiling water over the stain and watch it drip out of the fibers and into the bowl. This method works with wine, juice and berry stains. Love this, as there are no chemicals. So go forth and immerse yourself in white (and have another glass of Merlot)!

Mavi Adrianna glam white rinse $118 now at $89

This is just an utter show stopper! Just a breath of extra layer, with gorgeous embroidery detail. Wear it with destroyed jeans or even a tank dress. Just a few of many possibilities.

Cream sheer embroidered blouse $79

Maybe a fresh crisp blouse is your preference. White offers so many possibilities as, it's like a blank slate, adding colours is a total breeze. With the lovely detailing here, it still offers the possibility of just wearing it as is. Or build on the vintage look of the eyelet!

Cream Zina pintuck blouse $99

Because mosquito's would have more access to your beautiful skin, is no reason to pass up this great sweater. Just slightly out of the ordinary with slight open work giving that little extra something.

French Connection sweater (black or white) $68

White is kind of the 'smile' of the colour palate, people just naturally give you a head tilt and lighten up when you sport a bit of white, be it a big toothy grin, a diamond (yes please) or a garment. So don't be afraid of white, it's the colour of comforting things, our pillows, sugar for our tea or Gramma's hair.

What's blacker than black?

Follow

What's blacker than black? Please let me know if you find something as I'm a big 'void of colour' fan. At the risk of looking like I'm attending a funeral daily, I attempt to infuse other elements as I find it's a sensationally easy way to integrate separates. That being said, they say ones colour preference is a key to our personality. White, for instance, frequently implies calm, innocence and simplicity.  I love white but I don't possess any of those qualities. They (whoever they is) say we often feel colours more than see them. Let's get touchy feely then:

Image

With all the elegance of a white swan, this beautiful top will make you flow with grace, or...make you feel like one. Why this is such a sought after style? White literally will go with every other colour; makes for a fresh style when paired with jeans but easily can go from fun to function when paired with a pencil skirt and very trans-seasonal.

Kersh cap sleeve lace top (cream) $65

Image

By contrast red has a feel of power, strength, impulsiveness and boldness. And perhaps you're looking to inject energy or positivity into your life.  In many eastern cultures it's the symbol for good luck. This would be the ideal colour of choice in which case. Not many other colours turn heads in the way red does.

Very J curved hem t shirt (charcoal, off white or wine) $59 now $42

Image

Gazing up at a clear blue sky, often creates a sense of calm and relaxation. This is one of blue's main qualities, along with reliability, inner security and sense of confidence. This dress steps out of these qualities a bit into a more forward thinking, creative place with it's flowey, gathered front.

Simone scoop neck tunic dress (black, burgundy or teal) $110 now $79

Image

Grey, an often overlooked and viewed as dull, colour has more than meets the eye with qualities it brings. Grey is dependable, and practical but also elegant and refined. And how to look like a super hero in this fabulous poncho? Add this great belt for definition and don't shy away from a pendant or even an infinity scarf.

Soya Concept Polonia poncho (charcoal) $89

Image

Last but not least my favourite pick; I laughingly say implies seriousness, authority and responsibility (one out of three isn't bad). Conversely, can also display a more 'I'm with the band' look. The above dress is a very fitting seasonal piece with the burnout velvet texture and swing shape, which helps downplay the severity of black.

Kersh velvet burnout swing mini dress (black) $79

Charcoal is beautiful to an artist because it's his tool to creating artwork, green is beautiful to a gardener because it's his passion, yellow to the bus driver as she drives her children to school....but when we all look up at a rainbow, we all smile....

Chromophobia party!

GREAT NEWS: Plum is excited to announce it's new 'POP UP 'PIECES' STORE' at UBC...just in time for back to school, for a limited time only, check it out at the UBC BOOKSTORE!

A stark departure from the wonderful Pride events (colours and all), a newly emerged trend is Le Dîner en Blanc. Pride is an 'anything goes' and 'all welcome' type public social party! Dîner (began in France thirty years ago) is a refined, distinguished, elegant affair, by invitation only. Both are wonderful, however, one is a bit more of a stain magnet, as the requirement is 'white only' (everything)! This lovely, community building affair, affords you the opportunity to dress elegantly, bring a guest, and meet new people as you sit and converse, surrounded by a stunning white decor. Sounds great (I mean divine!)...So... let's get dressed!

Image

Go ahead and flirt. You know you can't help it in this dress. It's fresh, stunning and sexy! White eyelet is perfect for such an event and so form fitting.

Image

Another excellent choice is anything with lace or embroidery. This gorgeous top matches well with white pants or a maxi skirt.

Image

Show a little shoulder. Very much an 'in' trend this season. Great length if you wish to add a belt or use as a scarf instead. Perhaps add pearls and a white clutch!Image

A must have for the evening. Worn above as a scarf, doubles as a shawl...because the venue's are unknown ahead of time, you could be near the water. Don't let the evening breezes catch you off guard. Be prepared.

I love white...some of my favourite things are white...wine, sugar, Betty, liquid paper (throw back Thursday)....and of course a dress!! Nice to know one need not be a stressed out bride to wear one! If you're fortunate enough to be attending or invited, have a wonderful time, (and just in case, don't forget your umbrella...the white one!).

50 shades of black...is still black

In my opinion, February needs a bit of a kick in the butt. Doesn't February make you feel like you would like to go to sleep and not wake up until June? Perhaps it's the endless blocks of pedestrians tempting fate with the head to toe black (and of course the rain). Whatever it is, a titillating movie (and maybe a kick in the wardrobe department), might help the mood a bit. The current movie choice is fairly obvious but Plum can help cure the doldrums in the wardrobe department.

Take a look at some Plum picks...

Image

How fresh, pretty and romantic looking is this? Ultra feminine with a peak of lace (cami) beneath. Add (as above) a statement piece or a collection of eclectic necklaces as the twist neckline would welcome.

Plum front draped top (black, champagne, periwinkle) $79

Image

This is such a wardrobe basic. Basic white t shirt, jacket of choice and (as above) a pair of super comfortable jeans and you're set. Add or subtract accessories if you're feeling so inclined.

Nanavatee asymmetrical slub cotton t shirt (white, hot melon, khaki) $35

Mavi jogger comfort jean (dark sporty) $98

Tobias 2 button jacket (black) $179

Perhaps a great choice for Anastasia for her interview with Christian? Undeniably a great corporate look or even a date (as seen in the front of the email). Black and white together are clearly a great combination, however, any other colour will co-ordinate. Sometimes we're just too busy to construct a complex look, in which case, this works perfectly well as it is.

Tobias zip front fitted jacket (black, ivory) $185  Did you know that Plum now has online sales? www.plum.ca

I think when Drabuary rolls around, we all need a bit of a perk.  Injecting a bit of white into your wardrobe is such an uncomplicated way. And you never know, you might just happen to meet a billionaire (or look like you are one)!
