Sugar coated!

Can’t sugar coat it; the summer is gone like cotton candy in the rain, yet, my children are still trying to sneak tank tops and flip flops past me...'UM, THAT'S A NOPE darling!!' So, on that note, coats are a must now. And further to last weeks subject of recycle, reuse, fix…coats are a challenge to repair by ones self if they’ve gotten that old. And while I still house some 20 year old hoodies, that are pretty much rags with arms, it’s a stretch to think of coats as rags. I have, however, awkwardly repaired a few. So if you’re trying to stretch it as far as you can but it’s becoming thread bear, how about using one for the car for days when the weather starts out feeling like June but ends feeling like November, or maybe just use it as a seat cover for the dog (I’ve done that, my dog does not care what he sits on, I’ve asked him). All in all, we clearly want to do our part to not over consume, so reuse of an old coat, to justify the new, might take some creativity. But we all want to do Greta proud!

This is such a great, everyday coat! And have a look at the arm pocket. Possibly room for a cell phone? Can't get more neutral in colour. But to brighten it up, add an infinity scarf of any hue!

Soya Concept softshell jacket (black or sand) in store only

To wear with your coat...my favourite dress this season. What it lacks in 'WOW' factor, it more than makes up for in it's ubiquitous ability to transform itself for ANY outing. While black is my normal go-to, this time I went for grey...somewhat of an uncelebrated neutral.  And matching grey with other greys, I've found far more forgiving even when they are not exact (in a 50-shades-of-grey kind of way). And with a splash of red, both show off their unique colour qualities.

Bozzolo sheath dress (5 colours) in store only

I recently parted with a VERY very very old 'Mackinaw' jacket that I'd hung on to from my 80's days when way-too-big, was in. I'm pretty sure it was a size 50. Very much not flattering. So the above is a wonderful, slightly more feminine version of the Lumberjack shirt! Still warm and bright with great big pockets and cozy hood, but with a little less look of lumber!

RD Buffalo plaid coat (red or olive) in store only

Image

Jeans with the casual jacket completes the weekend look. This season, while skinny seems to be a staple, we're seeing far more boot cut or boot skim. Which, I think is fantastic...another excuse to pull out last season's fun, bold and maybe even embroidered boots.

Yoga Dominique straight leg jeans - in store only

Image

Underneath it all, you're just you...maybe you are the sort that literally never sugar coats things. Says it like is...Like Greta, telling us, the inhabitants of the planet, to get our act together! In any case, under your coat, by all means grab something cheery and bright! This is such a juicy colour, easily complimenting your bold spirit!

Glam boat neck boxy t shirt (5 colours) in store only

You can buy air freshener but you still eventually have to take out the garbage. You can put sugar on your cereal but you still need to eat vegetables. The point is, have your cake and eat it too, but someone still has to do the dishes! So, go ahead, buy the coat, we need to keep warm, just warm ourselves, not the planet!

I think it’s no accident that green is a predominant colour this season. We are being pulled to conserve, reuse, rework, fix, share or trade. And while I personally have never been a fan of the colour green myself for the better part of four decades, yet to others, it frequently can represent something rare and important…like eyes, emeralds or...money!

There is almost never a time that cardigans don't work. With layering they are almost a key component and the Kersh cardigan is one of Plum's staples. The lower button start makes it conducive to displaying some of our much loved accessories...like necklaces and scarves!!

Kersh ribbed waist cardigan (5 colours) now $49

Image

The Dreamers sweater from last promotion comes in a refreshing, apple green shade. People who wear green, they say, are more grounded...you know, close to Mother earth, hmm...which explains a lot about me! Regardless, it also suggests luck and balance. Try it with other sophisticated shades such as burgundy, navy or black!

Dreamers v neck sweater (9 colours) $75

Image

The button down is in everyone's closet and will likely never go out of favour. Mainly because it's a go to and a go under...things like cardigans, pullovers and jackets. The one above adds a bit of whimsy with it's frayed edges. Either tuck it in, wear it out with a wide belt or for a a fun look, tie it up, or button it up all the way and add a statement necklace!

Millibon fringed rayon blouse (limited quantities remaining-in store only) (lavender or lime) sale price $45

Image

The latest 'one and done' favourite is the jumpsuit. And it's definitely not too late to invest in one. The one above is fantastic for layering, either a tank top and jacket, add a wide leather belt and leg hugging boots, or ballet flats and wear it with the cardigan and a kerchief.

Millibon vneck jumpsuit (in stores only) Green - sale price $55

I have to say, it's a tiny challenge to write about a colour that represents my high school days....note... that's not a good thing! However, perhaps, I should re-evaluate my avoidance of green…after all, the essential to our planet – tree – is green, four leaf clovers, where all our luck grows from and the ever important, green grapes make wine! I might have to rethink this!

Needless say we like our perfection in places like, let’s... say our cars...a car that functions perfectly, and reliably. Or power tools...a drill, a saw…no surprises please! But fashion? Gone are the 50’s where, a woman’s hair was so neatly coifed that hurricane winds could not blow her do out of place. (my Mother should have invested in Final Net).  Perhaps now, we can exhale a bit with our styles. I’m not referring to leaving the house with an artistic rendering of spaghetti stains. I mean, must everything match perfectly? I’m trying to challenge myself to not do the matchy matchy, and yet feel ok about it!

ImageImage

While I normally try to avoid putting competing patterns, such as above, window pane, hounds tooth, stripes etc. or even varied florals together, this can totally work. The large window pane pattern definitely does not diminish the hounds tooth and vise versa, as well the colours compliment each other. Just experiment and see what feels right!

Millibon large check blouse (black or olive) $69

Ichi houndstooth pencil skirt (dark olive) $49

These Dreamers sweaters have been so incredibly popular Plum has brought them back multiple times. They come in 9 different colours and if you have 9 different moods, I suspect you're a fascinating individual! AND with Jewellery at 30% off, this is a time to experiment with accessories; mixing different metals for a more eclectic/artistic look. This is a great sweater worn with pendants!

Dreamers vneck sweater (9 COLOURS) $55

Mavi Juliette smoke camo jeans (smoked grey camouflage) now only $85

This adorable little dress is perfect for right now, with the seemingly endlessly, stretched out, season of sun! As it gets cooler, perhaps add a pair of capri tights. Maybe you have a favourite pair of polka dot shoes... and why not. Polka dots or simple patterns can create a refreshing, unmatched... match.

Final Touch tiered mini dress (olive or terra cotta) $89

My favourites this season are the Frida tops! As well, there is ample time to extend the wear of your kimono's. The incredibly conspicuously vivid blue's in both are just so uplifting! And as it gets cooler, and jackets become more necessary, Frida will be complimented by any number of different style jackets and cardigans!

Mahila Sarena print kimono $95

Runway Frida Kahlo top $59

In psychology, perfectionism is striving for flawlessness. Think about it for a minute; if all things were perfect, there'd be no need for makeup or need for Spanx (AGH-SHUDDER THE THOUGHT), or sewing machines, or liquid paper, although, I've discovered, liquid paper doesn't work on a computer screen! (just kidding-backspace here is my best friend)!

What was your favourite crayon colour as a child? Personally I could not believe I could create gold or silver bunnies! But originally crayons were created by Peekskill Chemical company for marking crates and barrels but later the blend was made safer for children's art by making them with wax. AND believe it or not, way back before my time even, French artist Francois Clouet used a version of them in his portraits. Another unsurprising fact; the seemingly loved by all colour of blue, according to Crayola itself, is the most popular colour. But really...who doesn’t love just the words raw sienna, Prussian blue or burnt orange (just how do you burn an orange though?). BUT really, fall creates the best crayon colours of all!

Image

I love this casual, mellow yellow sweater. The colour is light and warm but not too heavy for merging into fall. Try it with a skirt; clearly great with jeans, or crop pants or even layer it over a tank dress and then add a jean jacket for those unstructured days!

Mak vneck slub yarn sweater (5 colours) $59

Image

The wrap dress just never looses it's appeal because of it's easy, fresh charm. Maybe this would classify as burnt orange! A mix of red, muted orange and warm brown tones! Later in the season wear it with tall boots and a funky hat.

Misia wrap dress (black print or red print) $79

Image

And of course, with September comes the apple harvest season. We now have the popular Dreamers sweaters back in a multitude of beautiful seasonal shades. Green hues are cropping up and making a big show everywhere this season. Above, maximizing on the patterned grey camo, the green creates a lively pop of colour.

Dreamers v neck sweater (9 COLOURS) $55

Speaking of everyone's favourite crayon colour, see the above vest; a dream of blue and white swirling patterns. But you have to see the embroidery up close (and by the way, it comes in 4 stunning patterns); it just looks like pure magic.

Raj sleeveless embroidered vest (4 prints) $89

I'm not going to say it's time to colour outside the lines, that's too trite, or colour your world because that's a paint company...what I will say is...remember, black is also a crayon colour....(think..cats, sheep, mascara, forest cake...(Ok I know that's not a colour)),  because just maybe black is my your happy colour! No matter what season it is!

The origins of the word cool…stated in Wikipedia as "aesthetic of attitude", somewhat predictably evolved in the 30’s during the jazz era. Sometimes, it’s a quality easy to describe, but sometimes verbally it’s too hard to define! In dress or fashion, it's perhaps the look of ‘meh’ I don’t care , but secretly I do, but it needs to look like I don’t…confused yet? BUT... there is the other meaning…temperature…so, whether you’re going back to cool, school or even Liverpool, perhaps it’s good to look at something for the plummeting temperatures AND raising of suave!

ImageImage

On the cheat sheet for looking cool, this would be at the top of the list, aged looking jeans, easy fresh shirt and a white jean jacket, oh...and don't forget the Converse. If the kicks are too casual, these jeans are excellent for either working in the garden or a casual weekend look, a change of footwear is all it takes! OR what could be cooler than one of the new Frida tops

Mavi Ada boyfriend jean - for 4 days until August 25 $ 82.60

Runway Frida Kahlo blouse $ 59

Image

While there are other denim cuts trending, there's still room for the skinny jeans. And if you haven't taken the plunge yet...give them a go. There's definitely a way to wear them that's not provocative. Just casual and uncomplicated, as above...you know, like you'd like your life to be!

Yoga Rachel hirise skinny (dark indigo) for 4 days until Aug 25 $91

Image

I actually don't care if this is cool or not, I think it's gorgeous. I love the flow and drape of the kimono; casual, exotic/boho. Yet another co-ordinate that flows from extremely casual, like breakfast on your patio to an evening on a restaurant patio. And it comes in two patterns, a lighter print that's perfect for now or the one above which is great well into fall!

Mahila Arabella kimono (floral or grey print) $95

Image

This look definitely has that overt look of 'what you think of me, is none of my business'. Regardless, these cargos are so comfortable and very easy to match with other colours.

Mavi Juliette smoke camouflage (smoke grey camo) for 4 days until Aug 25 $82.60

There's something very 'I Dream of Jeanie' about this, perhaps the ethereal nature of the silk fabric. It's really good to think ahead, be prepared for upcoming affairs...I mean...events!

Meo Meli silk over jersey slip dress (black, denim, blue or red) $119

I'm pretty sure I don't need to explain what cool is, either in attitude, dress or verbal skills. When you got it, you got it, when you don't... walk tall and pretend whatever it is you're wearing 'IS' the new trend. Because, frankly confidence is always cool!
