secrets and lies

Follow

Speaking of 'inside sources'...do you have your own? Or rather, do you have beauty secrets you share with NO ONE, not even your cat? Personally speaking, I'm not one to keep things to myself, however, some things I do not care to share. To my great discomfort, someone once watched me while I applied my makeup. I'm quite sure no one would accuse me of being a 'natural' beauty; my eyeliner looks like it was applied with a magic marker most days. Yet, that process is something I don't care to share...However, Plum is happy to seek out and share with you some great and sumptuous sweater styles. Sometimes sharing is good! ;)

The secret to a great sweater is it's texture or colour or design... maybe all 3! This one has such a delicious simplicity, like vanilla ice cream! A great 'go to' pattern, cut and design suited for most body types...of course height dependant, a nice bum skimming length.

Point Zero cable knit turtleneck sweater (cream) $75

ImageImage

Something about the same old sweater that is so inviting....but if not...here's a refreshing take on the usual, with the oversized, off center pocket (big enough for an ipad or very large wallet), and a fabulous hood! The colours are so fall enticing!

Kerisma tera hoodie (brown, olive or grey blend) $89

Image

Who doesn't love a great twin set. Sold separately this is such a sleek, sexy pairing. Turtlenecks are very 'in' this season.  Beautiful worn open or add a wide belt for a bit of added style.

Backdrop sweater open duster (brown or green) $105

Backdrop sleeveless knit mock neck (brown or green) $68

Image

If you're a bit of a virgin to the poncho craze, here's one that might be your first. It's a poncho sweater with lovely ribbed sleeves, a really unique, curved hem and very flattering v shape pattern.

Kaffe kikki poncho (black/white) $79

Is your best kept beauty secret a body shaper, an opaque concealer or photoshop app on your smart phone? Probably your best kept beauty secret is your smile...and you should share that with everyone!

One size fits all!!

Follow
Whomever created that phrase must have been in a different industry, like tent making because one size 'rarely' fits 'all'. Even tents come in different sizes. On that note, shopping online can be an exercise in utter frustration from one retailer to the next when it comes to finding the right size. However,  Plum remains consistent with sizing with it's own labels and other labels it carries. In part, to strict quality control and a beautiful fit model consistent for over three years (an actual person). Let's have a look at a few sweaters for fall and some other options where size matters.

Image

Sweaters are fairly easy to get the size right online based on fabrication. This one is particularly easy to wear, no buttons to fuss with (open front) and a really nice line...as in, long, not super fitted nor boxy and an Aztec inspired pattern. Great start to the fall season!

Shopping online tip: When buying online always check the size chart and compare with your current measurements

CM open front jacquard sweater (Plum) $79

Time to get in the game and this is the place to start. Bomber jackets...the big in thing this season. This one is a must...so easy to wear because of it's knit composition. Offset the masculine vibe by wearing it with a full or a pencil skirt with heels.

Shopping online tip: Visit the store in person, try on a few labels and make note of how they fit. Next time, if you choose to shop online, you'll have a clear sense of fit

Kerisma gamine baseball jacket (black/olive/heather) $85

Sneaking away from the sweater topic a bit, let's look at dresses because Plum does dresses really well! You can't beat the wrap dress for fit as it accommodates various body types and is just so darn comfortable and sexy at the same time. (the two qualities don't often go hand in hand).

Shopping online tip: Do some research on fabrics. Better quality knits (for instance) generally have less give and a slightly more structured look while at the same time providing more comfort and ease of movement

Simone 3/4 sleeve wrap dress (blue, denim/olive, grey/red/black) $125

Here is yet another thing Plum does very well! Suits and jackets. And another thing where fit is essential. Have a long look at this fabulous head turning jacket. This may be the closest you'll come to custom made. Just a divine work of art in fabric!

Shopping online tip: When you know the retailer and their label, it's a pretty good bet season to season, the fits are the same

Tobias double breasted jacket with flared hem (black, pewter) $230

Shopping on line is like a gift from heaven for those of us with zero time to shop in the flesh. No lineups, you can leave things in the cart for extended periods of time, you can wear your pj's or nothing at all without getting arrested and you don't have to talk to anyone. No wait, that's not usually a positive. Remember Plum has brick and mortar stores as well so check out both.

20% OFF regular priced sweaters...offer ends November 11, 2015 (in store only).

One of Plum's main locations was hit by an ambulance and limo the morning after Halloween. Hard to miss the irony in this.  Thus why it was ultimately decided to 'actually' have a door crasher special! After all, there were no casualties, unless you count the mannequin (and don't forget, there was an ambulance on the scene). So, while the crews are working hard to get the store back to it's former glory Plum is featuring a great special on sweaters...because it gets cold when the doors are open!

Enough about that, let's get to the sweaters!

Doesn't this just compel you to want to sign up for ski lessons.  Me neither! But I do like that I can look like I ski, without the effort (and cold)!

Press ski motif sweater $92

Here's a very interesting, creative version of the usual cardigan. Nice and long, but beyond the ordinary, features a great cowl neck collar, that when unbuttoned, falls in a beautiful drape. Almost making it look like two different sweaters.

Kerisma Jodi button cowl (camel or dark grey) $98

ImageImage

Here is one for the 'show off' in you! Really this is a stunning sweater with lots of potential for multiple occasions for the upcoming season and date nights. If the sequin glitter is not enough, it also features a metallic lace up back! Lots of wow! Great also paired with destroyed denim and sky high pumps. A multitude of ways to work this co-ordinate!

Nuage glitter sweater (black or brown) $82

Image

The way to justify yet another sweater is....they're all different, of course! First glance it looks like any ordinary crew neck fisherman knit style pullover, yet it has a slight feminine twist.  A loose, slight shape and the shrunken look sleeves, allow for a multitude of bangles.

Kersh textured sweater (claret or moss) $59

I think when faced with a challenge, one can be destroyed, chat with a friend, make a joke...or better yet....ATTEND A SALE (ps...bring your friend to the sweater sale)!

As owner and buyer for Plum for 35 years I have learned to become disciplined in what I purchase for our customers.  Contrary to what you may imagine I cannot buy whatever I want.  Plum customers are very specific about what they want and need, so a Plum store must be balanced, consistent and beautifully merchandised.

Often I must pass up on things that I would love to purchase because it doesn’t fit into the mix.  That is where the new Plum Pieces comes in.

Image

At the beginning of 2015 we changed our Kitsilano store and experimented with a new eclectic mix of ‘pieces’ I could not resist.  The freedom as a buyer has been fun. Some are unique pieces, or trendy pieces, or just pieces that have nothing to do with anything else except that I have ‘fallen in love’ with them.

ImageImage

The new Pieces store still has lots of fashion that Plum has become famous for; like our own designs and locally made labels Simone and Tobias (plus this fall we have added acapella and wink wink to the collection).   But, since I am in New York and LA several times a year to find interesting fashions for Plum, now I can kind of ‘go nuts’ for the new Pieces store!  Much of what I buy will only be in Pieces.

So even if you love the Plum store you are currently shopping in, you may want to check out Pieces on Fourth Avenue in Kitsilano.  You may even find just the blouse, or dress, or scarf, or sweater you could not live without!

Let us know what you think!

What is texture?

Follow

What is texture? A feeling, a visual sense? A tactile sense? Never before have I seen a season which offered such inviting textures and patterns for all.  Including the picky person. You know...the 'no zippers,  no pockets here or has to be a certain length' person.. (I guess I just described myself). And yet I have so many this season, they now have their own room (maybe I should start charging them rent)!

Lets have a look at some of the great patterns and textures available at Plum.

Image

The front featured, email sweater has it all; I can see why it sold out the first time.  Great colour combination; lovely and neutral, yet not so much that you'll dissapear within. Very light weight which helps with layering. Length is supreme hitting at the knee, which is wonderful with dresses (or jeans); hooded with drape open front.

Cecico hooded sweater $ 79 (grey/charcoal or Indigo/Burgundy)

If a sweater could imitate a cloud...this one can. The photo really can't convey this but it's so incredibly soft, it feels like a baby duckling...the texture is just divine! The black and white combo is just fantastic because it can be married with any other colour. (Perhaps you can see the lovely, irregular texture and fuzzy nature of this beauty complimenting your curls?). A black rib border runs along the front and around the neck, which gives great definition. It's just so sophisticated and polished, yet relaxed and easy.

LeShop open cardigan $ 89 (black/ivory)

Fall and winter can be so blah and dull. Perhaps you'd like to invest in something that is sure to brighten things up. With it's striped, varigated, interspersed stripes of vibrant colours this pullover, vneck design creates many style options. And once again, very easy to layer. If your body type is such that you feel the need for a bit more definition, perhaps add a wide belt under the back, yet over the front. Or add a Jean jacket, sweater or even a puffer vest underneath, depending on the weather. I love that it can be worn inside or as outterwear, or both. Peel off the layers as you wish.

Do Everything In Love Poncho $ 59

Image

If you're afraid to get too involved in bold colour or pattern, this one has such warm, delicious, comfortable tones.  All of these sweater/shawl/ponchos are designed with uncomplicated wear in mind. The inclusion of armholes is a functional, subtle, design feature. And the combination of tones, which carry on into the fringe, provide for an easy to co-ordinate staple.  Matched with a great pair of the latest trend of knee high boots. Or be bold and go for the over the knee look. Just such a great boho, 70's look.

Fringe poncho $ 75 (camel)

Texture (and pattern) are such big parts of fall, as the leaves change colour and everyone lights up their fireplaces...we feel the need to be part of the texture of fall, so let texture and pattern breath life into your fall and accent your already beguiling personality! And find a texture or pattern to suit your senses.
