There was a time when baby boys and girls were not gender identified by the little blue onesie, or frilly pink dress, rather, they were largely, simply attired in white as it was easy to bleach. Then in 1927,Time Magazine published a colour guide for what should be worn on the wee one. Until then, believe it or not, pink was felt to be the stronger colour thus, thought better for boys. Recently I heard some pre-teens correcting each other...'there's no such thing as boys and girls colours!' So, perhaps, gender distinguishing colours...could they be a thing of the past? Thankfully blue jeans, are not and never will be just for boys! Let's have a look at some blues and some possible pairings!

I love this t shirt for when I'm happy, unhappy, annoyed, irritated, frustrated...and pretty much any emotion we humans are equipped with as, I always figure it might help me espouse the feeling. That or a donut! These classic jeans are an unbelievable fit. A totally wearable length for, boots, booties, high heels, espadrilles or flip flops. Such is the beauty of jeans... they go with everything from pearls to Plimsolls!

B Young happy T shirt (white) $29

Mavi Tess highrise skinny (dark grey vintage) $118 until April 28 $98

I love these botanical prints. At first glance I thought maybe they looked a bit like Grandmother's old throw cushions. But, hey, what's old is new again. And if you tend to be a huge pink fan, it's all about the pretty!

Bolide floral blouse (pink or white) $60

Kaffe print cotton t shirt (blue/white) $49

Yoga skinny highrise ankle jean (white) $138 until Apr.28 $118 (made in Canada)

And because we now know Kimono's are everywhere, they of course look amazing with jeans. Soon we'll be looking for things that add to the look, but with an appropriate lightness to match the weather.

Cream Kimono (blue/green) $119

Mavi Tess highrise skinny (deep supersoft) $128 until April 28 $108

Yoga skinny highrise ankle jean (white) $138 until Apr.28 $118 made in Canada

Another thing to try is a fabulous scarf such as the one above left. Wrap it around your neck in a whimsical fashion or open it up, and use it as a shawl. Plum has some fabulous Jewellery and I'm sure you'll be able to find something that draws out the metallic. As well the blue ties into the denim so perfectly.

Cream broad stripe scarf (blue/brown/metallic) $39

Mavi Alissa highrise super skinny (mid indigo Tribecca) $118 until Apr. 28 $98

ImageImage

Above left is a light breezy blouse that compliments the jeans on the right with such perfection. Add a few pendants and a wide brim hat, and it's a great look for a dinner date!

Grade+Gather long sleeve blouse (cream or rose) $69

Kaffe gather waist short (midnight marine) $69

Yoga Rachel classic rise skinny jean (Prague) $130 until Apr.28 $110 made in Canada

ImageImage

Perhaps you have some upcoming fun events planned, like the Calgary Beerfest or the Stampede. This is a really sexy look without being too over the top. The jeans on the right, try wearing with a pair of killer black boots or open toed booties.

Maronie twist front speckled knit top (grey or taupe) $59

Yoga Dominique straight leg jean (dark indigo or medium indigo) $130 until Apr.28 $110 made in Canada

Thankfully, by the time little ones can talk, they are able to express... 'I DON'T LIKE PINK!' (well, that would have been me). I really prefer to find my pink on the inside of a steak, a tall lemonade, cotton candy or cherry blossoms! And despite the fact that it's known to produce feelings of hopefulness, comfort and calmness, it's still not for me. Perhaps it could be a worthwhile uniform for military!

My extensive wardrobe of navy blue, deep green and beige has long since been passed on; when my attempts to 'fit in' faded away. There was not enough coffee in the world, to energize those efforts. However, I don't wish to compel my children to feign having never met me, thus, I keep the eccentricity to a minimum. Plum's new Mavi Julliette smoke camo jeans are just the best of stand out, and blend in, combined. Providing the best contouring fit, married with a very common, very now, outstanding pattern. Interesting oxymoron!

I waited patiently for these to arrive and when they did, they did not disappoint. I love Camouflage and I find the smoke grey tones go with far more colours than the standard military green. Designed with an abundance of comfort as well, four pockets and two deep cargo pockets, they are destined to be the pant of the season. Unlikely to be appropriate for courtroom proceedings, otherwise, they will definitely be the most often chosen pair.

From the middle ages until such time as Coco Chanel was inspired by seamen's garb in the early 20th century, stripes were seen as a diabolical pattern. Currently I'd say stripes conjure up an image of brightness and happiness. Despite the rigidness, I find stripes far easier to work with other patterns and colours than one would think.

ICHI long sleeve stripe t shirt (brick red) $49

These crop cuffed pants in camel colour, are yet another convivial hue that helps usher in the spring feeling. Always good to have a few neutral tones that take little or no thought to co-ordinate.

Jag Juliette pant (baby camel or nautical navy) $89

Image

This cobalt blue, waterfall front vest is a must for the redheads. A deep and intense colour, this jewel tone, tends to go very well with yellow, red and even turquoise. Try it belted to add extra style freshness, a pair of black skinnies and a pair of multi tone heels to add to the drama.

M sleeveless vest (cobalt or white) $75

The moto jacket has risen to the top of the trends in the last few years. Ichi has given it a cool, yet sophisticated twist with it's linen/cotton composition. A really nice possible change up for the corporate setting.

ICHI linen blend jacket moto style (straw) $119

ICHI linen blend skirt (staw) $79

Fitting in, likely means you are at home in an environment that is most like you. Blending in, can mean you've adapted to the environment. But if you step out of those and feel more comfortable being different, then you are at home! And home is not a place, it's a feeling!

A couple of shout outs...one to the staff at Plum's Granville location. I stepped in for a mere 10 minutes on the weekend, with two kids in tow and was utterly impressed by the service once again! Thank you! And on this, World Downs Syndrome day to someone very close to me who regularly teaches me, different is who we all are!

$20 COUPON - MIN $95 PURCHASE - OFFER EXPIRES SUNDAY MARCH 25*

How dare I talk about pink. After all, it's like Donald Trump giving a Ted Talk on staff retention. Ok...not quite, because, I respect pink, I dress my children in it, I smile when I see pink flowers, and I would not buy and then get rid of pink. In any case, it's one of the most popular of spring colours. And let's not forget just how many romantic walks take place during a Rayleigh scattering (aka: pink sunset). Pink is...well, a happy colour that generally elicits good feelings. And apparently there is a millennial pink. So, let's explore the colour of now:

Image

This is just 'the' sweetest combination...pink, with crochet lace and paired with denim. Pink truly seems to be at it's best with the ruggedness of denim. They bring out the best in each other.

Cream lace blouse (chalk or sea pink) $79

Image

I think this open front jacket is just a brilliant take on the blazer with the added frill edging. If you're a little too timid to go too feminine, again, as above, wear with jeans and find a fun, graphic or band t to pair it with to offset the girliness.

Cream cardigan jacket (midnight or sea pink) $99

Image

Or...maybe just a light whisper of pink perhaps? Great blouse, fresh and light; love it paired with the pencil skirt but would clearly work well with ankle length jeans or trousers. Liven it up with a pendant or three and your favourite jacket.

Ichi long sleeve blouse (rose dust) $69

Ichi houndstooth skirt (black) $69

Image

Utilitarian + pink = pretty functional. A sweet, simple cut that's sure to appeal to most, with a carefree print which to me resembles pussy willows blowing in the wind.

Ichi dress (dark grey, military olive, navy or old rose) $65

Imagine a world where crows, piano keys or dulse (it's an east coast thing), were pink....hmmm...maybe not! Because really,  there's a good reason why pink is the colour typically associated with anti bullying and fighting breast cancer. Because despite it being a light hearted version of it's angry, edgy, cousin red, the power of pink is in it's softness. Because kindness rules!

When you think of red, do you instantly think of roses, lipstick, a fireman's hat? Or does your mind go to lobster, Ronald McDonald's hair, blood donations or Canada's flag! Go team Canada Go!! Regardless of how your mind works, it really is head turning. Thus why it's the colour for stop signs, alerts or Valentine's day.  And did you know that July 25 celebrates St. Valentina, a Palestinian woman martyred in 308 AD. So apparently one can celebrate Valentine's day on other days other than Feb.14th. Although, I don't need an excuse for chocolates year round.

A sweet, feminine and yet easy dress design. Draws all the eyes to you and yet you can move so freely in this flowey maxi.

Image

A great sweater for layering, with it's very light, sheer texture. Wear it with a blouse or a tank top beneath in an alternate colour.

Image

Another delightful pattern, yet in red floral. Florals are synonymous with spring and the above dress is a sweet take on an easy fitting style. Featuring a unique, complete button down the back design, thus creating an alternative. Wear it front to back or back to front. And if you prefer the 'violets are blue', it also comes in a blue pattern.

Image

Of course, there are other versions of red, less bright. Like the above sleeveless, more earthy, terracotta shade. Featuring a drawstring, a mid waist flounce and an exquisite allover floral print.

Shall we talk about love and pink? Love is a touchy subject and pink...it's just a red wanna be! Just kidding, it's just a less assertive cousin of red. Sweet and nice but not as risky!

Be Young love print t shirt (white) $29

Cream ruffle front open cardigan (spring rose) $99

So if red is your colour and passionate hue

can't fathom wearing, purple, grey or blue

you're likely to be the first to go find or explore

challenges for you are never a chore

They say you're assertive, they say you're in charge

because you live life ever so large

So lover of red, I raise a glass to you (red of course)

Some advice, a fact, so true

as you look at me, your eyebrows have creases

Just remember that bikini's still come in TWO pieces!

20% OFF SWEATERS - in store only - head into a Plum store near you and get into something WARM and pretty!

Allegedly attributed to Oscar Wilde. Nonetheless, it's a humorously valid point. That being said, there is certainly room to 'try on' another persona from time to time and fashion is a great tool.  At times, I sometimes tire of my own 'dark-princess-boho-new-age-hippy-artist' look! You know? Maybe for instance, you've always wanted to be a prima ballerina but a feeling of awkwardness stood in your way, or a plumber, and your Mother said, 'you're too delicate to be a plumber dear'? Time to challenge your old stereotypes and unwrap another part of you! Go buy something pink or get yourself a pair of overalls and get yourself under that sink and explore those pipes! After all, it's still you, it's just an add on ;)
Image
Spotted this on the boss yesterday and it looked so good I almost paid her a compliment! This sumptuous, substantially textured open front sweater is such an eye catcher, as well so comfortable to wear.

Image
And speaking of sweaters...(because, they're 20% off right now and it's cold)...two things that go very well together. if I was to venture into the more feminine look, this is one I'd pick...an ice cream pink hue, cable knit, open front with lots of length.

Image

This billowy variegated mohair knit sweater compels me to curl up near a fireplace with a thick hard cover (or popcorn and Youtube)! Or I envision an artist bringing a large canvas to life! Regardless of who this adorns, it shows a lot of flair.

Image

A bit of a departure from sweaters, thought I'd present something quite bright for the season. And red is huge this year. Shutter the thought that it ever went out. Despite it being holiday season, we're seeing a bit more than usual. Just a gorgeous, bold, flowey silk blend top that would work quite well for all other seasons and climates.

Life is just too short so, GO there, eat that, read that, watch that and go buy that thing that gives you a candy coated, cup cake frosting covered with sprinkles feeling. After all, who ARE YOU? Meghan Markle said when, as a child, she was required to fill out a form stating she was white or black...she turned to her father who said 'draw your own box'!
