BABY IT'S COLD OUTSIDE

The beginning of December begins, Christmas shopping, parties and Christmas song season. Christian or not, season celebrator or not, most of us love to belt out the old favourites, performing our own Car-eoke! One tune recently brought to the court of social media was (blog title) ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’. Don’t know what I’m referring to? Google the lyrics and think #metoo! This had a bigger social backwash publicly recently than an all you can eat buffet. But you know, if you want something to keep you warm but that steps away from any controversy…just go with everyone’s old favourite…a sweater!

I love this pulled together ensemble. The fuzzy sweater look is a huge favourite in recent years, and probably needs no explanation from me! Together with this great knee length dress, anyone's 'maiden aunts' will not disapprove (see the song lyrics). And needless to say when the 'weather outside is frightful', simply add a pair of tights and the look is complete and functional.

Spencer + Shaw dolman sleeve knit dress (rose or charcoal) was $110 sale price $55

This sweater/tunic is a great seasonal option for so many activities. Everything we do in December is not an upscale party, thus the need for something functional as well. I love the side slits because you don't feel engulfed in fabric. Worn above with skinny pants or perhaps textured leggings or even knee high boots. The grey shade produces an opportunity for creativity either keeping things subdued or a splash of color (as in lipstick, nail polish or a bold necklace or scarf). I can even envision it belted.

In recent years the move to resuscitate the 'ugly sweater' trend has certainly worked. Centered around sweaters with sometimes garish and quirky patterns, they appeared to have started at least four decades ago, often made by Grandma. Nowadays they're the center of get-togethers (ugly sweater parties etc). Above, while it sports a design on the front, in my mind would be classified as the anti-ugly sweater. Perhaps we can start another trend. One that's less of a fashion comedy and that brings together warmth and style!

The crop sweater not to be outdone by the tunic sweater.  The crop top, t shirt and sweater trend I remember it well from the 80's when it was in its hay day. While it wasn't really something I could easily wear then or now, if you are so inclined to try it out, there are some creative ways to wear it comfortably, if you're not into over sharing! Such as a complimentary t shirt beneath, that perhaps has a contrasting colour, texture or lace. Or wear it with a blouse! Looks great also with skirts of various different lengths.

: the warmth of the sun in winter

Such a pretty word that was invented in 1623 but not commonly used today, perhaps its use could be re-ignited. ‘Baby it’s Cold Outside’ which was written and first released in 1949 (and multiple times since), from a vastly different era, until now has stood the test of time. But some things, like actual candles on a Christmas tree, as was the case historically, is likely better left in the past, for possibly obvious reasons!

Last blog was about staying indoors; avoiding the cold, reinventing ourselves or...just enjoying being inside and warm. What? You didn't read it? I just may never recover from that. In any case, it's probably time to venture out. The pavement is finally exposed (as will be our blindingly pale skin from the lack of vitamin D). So, just go for it, go for a walk; your body needs the blood pumping. What else gets the blood pumping? A good sale. And Plum has great end of season deals. But you do have to go into a local Plum to grab those great things that you know you missed out on! Get dressed, put on your boots and coat (or go and buy one)!

I can't say enough about the poncho craze. They're a great, functional addition to the wardrobe and can realistically span three seasons. I love layering them on top of jackets or coats or even sweaters and I must admit I wear them around the house for an extra layer.

I'm sure by now you've invested in snow tires, so it's time to make sure you also have a coat. A winter one...because we're in Canada...you know...where it's cold (we sometimes forget this on the far west coast).

Scarves just never go out of style. We pack them away for the next winter, then gleefully pull out our favourites again when the season suits of course. Plum has such a luscious variety of scarves; the price is right now to stock up.

If you're in search of a good basic sweater, look no further. Super soft, long in length (not tunic length but long enough to cover the bum and keep it warm), side slits, 81% cotton, great to belt or wear a necklace with and comes in 6 great fall colours. AND it's an excellent deal.

Kersh crew neck sweater (6 colours) was $59 NOW $29

I'm sure I'm not the only one staring longingly out the window in anticipation of the spring and higher temperatures. But in the words of Thomas Edison "Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work".  Come to Plum, no overalls are required.

Perhaps you're not partial to cross country skiing, hours of shoveling or making snow angels; possibly you enjoy the indoor sports....you know, reading books, watching movies or dancing around the living room to 80's music (oops that's me). Really what are some of your indoor passions? Do you knit, wood carve, bake or paint? This is an excellent time to dive into your passions, start a new project or finish an old one. Or...dare I say, maybe it's just watching YouTube video's of strange animal friendships or...shopping...let me help feed that passion (the latter)...

Well, you can cozy up to something other than a boyfriend or dog....how about a sweatshirt and a hot cocoa (or wine)....accompanied by an old black and white film....you see, January is good for something.

Plum hooded sweatshirt (burgundy, charcoal or teal) was $72 now $29 (purchase instore only)

Image

I think this is a particularly scrumptious sweater.  I realize it lacks vibrancy with it's black, white and grey palette...but that's where your bright red lipstick comes in. All 3 colours will ultimately match any other colour. And the winter white next to your face, helps brighten your complexion.

Kersh tricolor turtleneck sweater (tricolor) was $84 now $42 (purchase instore only)

I love this for it's ability to transform. From a dress to a tunic to a coat. Wear it buttoned up and belted or open (as above) or over a dress. Lots of ways to make this work.

JW long sleeve side slit denim dress (dark or light denim) was $89 now $25 (purchase instore only)

ImageImage

What to wear with your 'crazy cat lady' t shirt other than your cat? Try a poncho. Easy to throw on for the cold nights inside, or over a coat, a jacket or sweater...so great for layering. Mixing patterns is fine, pick a colour to co-ordinate, or keep within the same family of tones.

Bear Dance 'one cat away from crazy' t shirt $35

KW aztec poncho with scarf (multi) was $95 now $47 (purchase instore only)

Yes of course watching Netflix is a sport...why else would they call them marathon's?

Although the Christmas season has many virtues (read: hot beverages on cold nights, time spent with loved ones, baked goods out the wazoo, and Boxing Day shopping), there's no denying that it can be a stressful time too. Between a hectic schedule, traveling, and a to-do list that sometimes seems to be on the verge of out of control, we have to remind ourselves to take time just for us. And, dare I say it, treat ourselves once in a while? Coincidentally, we'll be announcing another exciting giveaway tomorrow on our Facebook page. Because hey, we like to treat you too.

So what better time for a sale? Now until December 24th, you'll receive 25% off all accessories (excluding Hue hosiery and socks - but you know you're getting socks for Christmas anyway, so no biggy).

A sale like this is a great time to kill two birds with one stone - stock up on gifts and stocking stuffers for the people on your list AND reward yourself for maintaining your sanity. Win-win, friends!

So what do you think? How are you taking time for yourself this busy holiday season?

And don't forget: our ever-popular Kersh open cardigans are still on special - $39 each when you buy two or more! For tips and ideas of how to style them, check out this recent blog post.
