Ode to the scarf

Scarves today can easily take the place of jewelry, offering a pop of color or giving the wearer multiple other colors to draw into the outfit (or if you're me...new bike helmet). The emergence of the infinity also offers a fun, uncomplicated alternative. Again (if you're me), no longer a need to worry about them getting caught in the bicycle spokes because the beauty of the infinity is they wrap endlessly, framing your face.

Very few garments can offer such an extension of your wardrobe in such an economical way. Consider the larger scarf. Large enough to wear as a shawl and yet light enough to be folded up and tucked away in your handbag when the temperature changes. The same scarf easily transitions to a beach cover up. Feeling a bit more adventurous? Wrapped in a slightly different fashion, these exaggerated, yet guazy fabrics, replace the usual cardigan or shawl and offers a bit of coverage in a slightly edgier way. Doesn't it make you impatient for summer?

From here to infinity, you can never have too many scarves!

Sheer Joy

What captures your attention? Something bright or red, something sparkling or multi-coloured? How about the sheer, living room drapes? They tend to blend in, right? But on you, sheer need not blend, nor do you need to fear it. The beauty of this is that it can blend if you want, or serve as contrast for something else like a fabulous hat, a funky newsboy cap; a stunning scarf? Maybe both? Or perhaps an interesting pattern underneath, a stripe? or... just your saucy little bra! (I dare you). Be a trend setter, put something on that makes others go "Hmm... I wonder if I could pull that off"! It's a wonderful, show your shape, sheer, yet not too revealing, comfortable (gasp, I used the c word), staple. It’s an item that can show off your personality.

Image

You can also try a belt that sits just below the waist, or an elastic waist belt, fabulous bright red pumps, cuffed, distressed jeans (or for a more serious/more understated event where drawing attention would be a negative, like lunch with the mother-in-law, do capri's with flats. Maybe borrow the vest from your boyfriend (remember that bra I mentioned earlier? the vest helps if you're a bit shy!). Different day, different you.

This delightfully sheer bohemian print blouse sports an uber feminine, flounce cascading below the bodice. An effusively feminine print, that easily plays against any basic funky, lived in denim, basic skirt or even shorts. Like a multitude of pieces all in one!  Since it’s sleeveless, a shawl or one of our Kersh cardigans would work wonders on a warm summer night. Pluck any color from within and add a subtle, yet sleek, necklace (choose a shoe that suits the day) and you’re good to go. (available in fuchsia and aqua prints)

Be brave and try something sheer, add one funky, unexpected item and have the courage to be fabulous! Yes, that's what I said! Don’t let light colors (or lack of) steer you away from being your stunning self... because you know you are (stop pretending you're not)!

Kersh Cardigans

Now that I’ve switched my closet over to spring, I rarely leave the house without a Kersh cardigan. As we transition from spring to summer, they are the perfect accompaniment.

Image

While it’s not warm enough outside to wear a cardi as a jacket, a bold tabbed sleeve style adds a layer of colour between my spring trench and a tee. And because I don’t want to wait to wear it, a bright ribbed waist cardigan compliments my sundress until the summer heat. Even then, the chill inside the office will call for a lighter layer so I'll bring one just in case.

Classic black or white goes with everything this season offers, but the spring calls for brighter colours. This season, Plum’s buyer selected Pool Blue, Grenadine, Leaf and Blue Bell as the fresh new palette exclusive to our stores.

No matter what the weather, I have a cardigan close at hand.

From now until April 6th: save $10 off the Kersh Ribbed Waist Cardigan (reg. $49 now $39) and $15 off the Tabbed Sleeve Cardigan (reg. $69 now $54).

Your body shape is determined by the proportions between your shoulders, bust, waist and hips. But no two bodies are alike. By knowing the shape of your body, you can understand the different effects clothes have when you wear them. If you find that one part of your body is out of balance with the others, you can choose to draw or detract attention from those areas of the body by using different garments. Because they hang from the shoulders to the hip, jackets can affect the perception of our body shape.

Image

Are your hips wider than your waist and bust? If so, you have a triangle shape. Because of your lower half’s proportions, you might want to draw the attention upwards to create balance. Have you tried something with a strong shoulder? A jacket with structured shoulders paired with a simple bottom can create more balance in your shape. If you attracted attention to your lower half instead, you might only emphasize your hips’ width against a smaller waist and bust.

Image

You have an inverted triangle shape if your shoulders are wider than your bust, waist and hips. If you wanted to create balance, solid coloured fitted jackets don’t attract as much attention to the span of your shoulders, while you can play with adding more of your clothing’s details on your bottom half.

Image

If your waist is wider than your bust or hips, you have an oval shape. Because of your proportions, you might not want to draw attention to your mid-section so you can create a straight line between your shoulders and hips with the right garments. Why don’t you try an unstructured jacket that falls below the waist? Because it would fall straight down the sides of your body, it would even create the illusion that there is a dip where your waist is.

If you don’t have a noticeable difference between your bust, waist and hips, you have a rectangle shape. You might find that drawing attention to your waist just shows how similar your bust, waist and hips are in relation to each other.  Instead, try a jacket that falls below the waist and has an unstructured fit so it creates balance between your proportions.

You have an hourglass shape if you have an obviously smaller waist than your bust and hips. Because your shape is the most balanced naturally, you can choose to highlight your proportions by drawing attention to your waist. A fitted jacket with shaping seams through the waist works well because it draws attention to the X shape of your body.

Not just reserved for household chores, distressed denim has been reclaimed. New moms rejoice! These jeans are your uniform. What was once considered sloppy, tattered and torn jeans are easy to style, easy to dress up whatever your lifestyle.

Image

For those marathon errand runs, layer a shirt over a tank and roll your cuffs over your converse or sandals. In your large tote, bring along an extra t-shirt for any accidental spills, but relax about your jeans because smudges just blend in!

When you get to relish in a coffee date, half-tuck your blouse into your jeans and cuff your jeans to draw attention to your heels. Remember, the less you fret over the details, the more stylish they'll be.

How do you wear distressed denim?

Take a look at the distressed denim we have in stores and get inspired with our Pinterest boards.
