Melange Yarn Sweater in Orange/Ade (pictured) and Purple/Rain, $79

There are few things in life that can top the feeling of bundling up in a cosy sweater on a cool day.      And lucky for us, sweaters are one of those magical articles of clothing that can be both practical      (read: warm) and stylish.

A sweater is a great way to pull the individual articles of your outfit together. Pair it with slim-leg pants and top it with a scarf for an easy ensemble that always looks put-together.

These sweaters (below) are both great examples of what to look for this fall. Rich patterns and textures create depth and interest in your look, the same effect that is achieved through layering multiple articles, in one easy step.

(Psst. This scarf comes in Blue, Grey, Mustard, Pumpkin, and Red. I bought the red straight out of the packaging and can attest that it is now my #1 favourite outfit completer.)

Coats

"Your coat is your car." This quote has been sticking in my mind for months now (seriously, I've been saving this one up since August). It is a perfect and simple truth. A good coat takes you everywhere and, chances are, you will spend a great deal of time in it.

Image

So naturally, when choosing your coat, it makes sense to look for a classic style, like the one picture above. While it borrows from the very current military style, the clean, simple lines and subtle colour ensure the timelessness of this piece.

ImageImage

A coat with a convertible funnel neck (left) or a similarly high neck (right) is also a savvy move. If you've ever been caught out in a Canadian winter without a scarf off, you know why.

Equally important when you're choosing your coat is quality, as a carefully constructed coat made of high-quality materials will ensure the longevity of your purchase. Plum's Tobias coats are manufactured right here in Vancouver. The 3/4 length military style (shown in the first picture) is made with a lush Italian wool and nylon blend with a Kasha lining. The dense weave and lofty nature of these fabrics provide extra warmth without being overly heavy in weight. $330

But of course we know that a gal's got to have options. That's why we're pleased to offer variety in our outerwear. Our draped front style coat, made with boiled wool and a high-quality spandex lining, will suit your comfort and your style. $220

Trailblazer

Blazers have been a closet staple for years now, and Fall 2012 is no exception. So you might be eager to get in on the trend, but not so thrilled about the prospect of donning a full-on suit. Have no fear, today on the blog we'll be showing you how to style the jacket into other great outfits.

Image

Image

When you're breaking out of your suit jacket + dress pants comfort zone, styling a blazer is as easy as pairing it with your favourite coloured skinny jeans. You're welcome to my super secret industry trick, just don't spread it around too much. Finish this look off with a cute pair of boots and you're done!

Image

Image

The blazer is a also a great piece to build a more involved outfit around. Plum staffer Madeleine from our South Granville store started with a sheer blouse, added a denim button-down, and finished it all off with a smart tailored blazer. By using different textures and fabric weights, she's created depth and interest in her look while her skinny jeans keep the ensemble from feeling bulky.

Another way to wear your blazer this fall is like a light outerwear jacket. It'll smarten up any outfit that you normally would have tossed a jean or (shudder) fleece jacket over, and it's just as easy, promise! With a double-breasted jacket like this, you want to add a little bit of extra detailing to make up for what's hidden underneath. Laura Beth (staff at our White Rock location and Plum web model) used a statement necklace and a purse in oxblood, the season's hottest colour, to up the visual interest.

The New Office Attire

How do you walk the line between professional and fashionable? It can seem like a difficult trick to master, but every woman should be able look and feel amazing, regardless of their work environment. Suiting is the appropriate choice for most office settings, but the thought of wearing the same old thing day in and day out is almost enough to put this blogger back to sleep.

With that in mind, let's talk about contemporary office options that will make you stand out at work for all the right reasons.

Image

While it is important to look well put-together and professional in a work setting, you don't want to lose sight of your own unique personality while doing so. So yeah, do try a nicely tailored suit, but pair it with a blouse in your favourite jewel tone. And update the look with a pair of modern tapered dress pants, as seen above (I may or may not be wearing these pants right now and can vouch for their major comfort factor).

Image

If you do happen to work in a more creative or relaxed environment, you can still tailor the rules of suiting for your needs. The military-style jacket was captured adopted by women as early as the late Victorian era, and hasn't ever really left the style scene since. The classic tailoring and simple chicness have secured it as one of fashion's most iconic pieces. For the office, finish the look off with a pair of skinny jeans and either pumps or boots (we'll let the weather dictate that one).

And now for something special! If you subscribe to Plum's E-News, you've received our exclusive Fall 2012 coupon. But did you know that if you share the coupon with your friends you'll also be entered to win a $200 Gift Card?

You can read all the details by clicking here!

And finally, I want to know, how do you walk the line between professional and fashionable? You can leave me a comment here, on our Facebook page, or tweet me @Plum Clothing!

A Woman in Red

Image

Wrap front dress, in red and black, $129

As the seasons change, its important to select a few truly versatile pieces that will help ease you through the transition. Enter the little red dress. I know it's hard to think of it this way at first, but red truly is the new neutral (think it's a coincidence Switzerland has a red flag? I think not). Wear it with pumps for cocktail hour or top it with a black blazer for the office. Look for one that is lightly tailored (gently nipping in at the waist with a slight pencil skirt) and you'll have a dress as multi-talented as you are!

With shapes to suit every body and hues to complement every skin tone, it might just be time to welcome a new red dress into your wardrobe. Red speaks of self-assuredness in the workplace and of sophistication on an evening out. It can be worn to show your confidence - or even to help you fake some.

Pair your LRD with black, gold, silver, or leopard print accessories for a modern spin on fall's classic colour.
