It is frightening to drive the streets during the winter ... especially in the rain!  When I was a child my parents, school teachers and even the mayor of our city called upon everyone to wear something white at night so drivers had a better chance of seeing pedestrians.  But now it is not unusual to see pedestrians in  head to toe black and sometimes even having their hoodie up!  It makes pedestrians completely INVISIBLE.

It made us think about what we could do to help our customers become visible at night.  So I looked for white scarves that we could sell on promotion and at the same time raise money for one of our favourite organizations, Dress For Success Vancouver.

Plum has been a supporter of Dress For Success Vancouver since its inception.  DFSV helps women who are challenged with getting a job.  They offer an initial interview outfit donated by people like our own customers and offer useful and relevant support to get them back to work.

Consider making a donation this season.

And please, get one of our night scarves and keep it with you when walking at night!  They are only $10 while quantities last. All proceeds go directly to Dress For Success Vancouver. (One per customer and only available in Plum stores).

Did someone just flip a switch?  As much as I love the spring, and try to embrace the wardrobe change, I cling to my blacks and darks. As soon as the weather brightens, I feel a bit like an evil spirit coming surreptitiously out during the daylight hours.  Suddenly I feel compelled to bury my blacks in the back yard, however, still clinging to them like a lifeline! It is possible to liven up your wardrobe (I tell myself), while still being ones self! Here are a few ideas.

Image

This supremely beautiful jacket is simple, comprised of clean lines, with pucker pleated sleeves and 100% linen. You know...the fabric that wrinkles when you look at it, but that just adds to it's character (that's what I tell myself about my wrinkles)! Great for those who like to dive right into the season!

Tobias linen jacket with pleated sleeves (grey, natural or rose) $179

Mavi Adrianna glam white rinse (white) $118

Plum ribbed tank top (12 colours) $18

Image

If you're like me, you're not ready to drown yourself in a vat of happy colours. Not ready for the white, or even light...well what about bright? This jewel shade top is just the thing to pump up the colour in your wardrobe. Stick with the dark or denim bottoms but light next to the face...people will think you started a new relationship! Just a wonderful marriage of eyelet in a knit fabrication.

Wink wink cap sleeve eyelet t shirt (jade, pink or white) $49

Image

And another idea...a throw/shawl. So many fresh, lively colours, yet still merging nicely from the dark season. A great ethnic feel, with wonderful ribbons of bold colours woven through the edges. Complete with tassels.

KW stripe yarn die Ruana shawl $49

ImageImage

Another true sign of spring is flowers. Whether it be planting them or wearing them. This is such a delightful botanical print with an undeniably feminine shape and adorable back bow tie.

Creme Rosemary tie back t shirt $69

Image

Maybe it's just as simple as adding a cheerful scarf. The one above is nicely paired with a stripe shirt, which acts as a neutral against the complexities of the faux patchwork scarf.

KW multi print scarf (blue or mustard) $35

So if you're like me and drench yourself in dark, somber shades through most of the year, maybe you feel slightly compelled to climb out of the darkness for a few months....sometimes, begrudgingly!  There are subtle ways though, without turning into the wardrobe equivalent of a sheet of unlined paper.

who owns 200 scarves?

Category:

Plum's owner Katie O'Brien owns over 200 scarves; some forgivably are not current as they go back to the turn of the century (the previous one)! She wears one every day...they are her signature! But maybe you say "Suzanne I don't have a fashionable bone in my body"...or you simply have no time to invest in making creative looks! Poppycock I say! Scarves are THE easiest, least expensive way to funk up your wardrobe, create a look and change an outfit!! And Plum (thanks to the Scarf Queen), has a fantastic selection! Here's a sampling of what's available:

ImageImage

While there is arguably not a lot of colour, this scarf is great in a multitude of ways. It's large enough to double as a shawl. I held it up and it covered my entire doorway. The neutrality of the black and off white means almost any other colour you choose will work with it, If you're adventurous, put it together with a carefully chosen pattern. Or, add a belt or fedora to the mix, adding to the pizzazz!

Look plaid pattern wool blend scarf  (black, burgundy, yellow) $39 (as seen on front of email)

Image

Maybe you like to stay away from pattern, or, you wear a lot of patterns, and therefore, are looking for an accent, in one colour. This rich hued, open weave scarf might be what you're in search of. Love how it's casually thrown over her shoulders worn with another great earth tone. Features  satin edging and angular edge bottom.

Open weave scarf trimmed (black, burgundy, ivory, rust) $38

Image

Infinity scarves...whomever invented these knew I needed an alternative to necklaces and tired of the ends falling in my soup. Kidding aside this is a beautiful, delicate bohemian/eastern pattern. Pick an unexpected tint from the scarf pattern to draw it out.

Infinity scarf (green, navy or orange) $32

ImageImage

This clever piece is both a shawl and a scarf. Wear it as a shawl, wear it thrown over one shoulder, or wear it to the side, on the hip, fastened with a broach!

Monochrome triangle scarf (black or taupe) $59

Wear them as a shawl, wrap them in different ways, add some colour to a monochromatic look, add earrings, fasten with a pin. So very easy to add some flair and create your very own signature.

First a wonderful deal to take advantage of. Jewellery and scarves bogo event...the best part is, you can mix and match...who can resist this!? So please, go forth and BOGO to your hearts content.

Bursting forth big again this season is boho style. Providing an organic, natural and fresh feel. Plum has many drool worthy pieces constructed with varied findings. Discover something new to revive your style and bring out your inner 'Flower Child'!

Here is a mere hint of what Plum has in store:

Image

Not sure you could find more of a boho look than lace or in this case eyelet...and an ecclectic mix of long beads.

Plum is host to some wonderful accessory designers; many made right in Canada. One such company, new to Plum, is Frug. Hand made in Toronto, Frug has created some very unique pieces using mixed media such as brass, cord and semi precious stones, giving their designs a very organic feel.

Frug is coming next week to various locations...stay tuned!

Perhaps you feel compelled to match things...such as this gorgeous statement necklace (you really have to see this close up), paired with a similar tone ring. Giving off a decidedly bohemian or ethnic look. Turquoise is such a fresh, happy colour for spring.

Necklace rope with fans $49

Flower ring $25

ImageImageImage

And lets not forget about the ubiquitous scarf. Look at the many ways it can be transformed.

Look Paris, Italy, New York scarf $38

Not only beautiful with bold, gold hardware this bag is also functional in several ways. Contains a smaller insert but is also reversible...meaning you've now bought 2 bags instead of one. How smart are you!

Jody reversible tote with insert  (4 colour combinations) $69 (not part of BOGO event)

Accessories are as much a part of style as punctuation is to a sentence. Makes it complete, pulls it together and adds emphasis. Speak loudly (add many layers), or softly (one delicate piece). It's all up to you,  Plum merely adds the tools and expertise.

PRE CHRISTMAS SALE ANYONE? Yes of course Plum has thought of this....so you can fit in more gifts!

Have a look at some of the great specials available now at the Pre-Christmas sale

Christmas glitter? Are you fully enmeshed in the Christmas tinsel rush? How to stay calm at Christmas, keep from feeling overburdened while being able to enjoy the festive time? One can easily get extremely overwhelmed by the daunting tasks at hand. Making lists, packing things to go via post, wrapping; yet still attending many functions and fitting in the regular duties. It's hard to remain sane! (as is my perpetual challenge).

Here's a mini seasonal survival guide:

  • Make a list. Yes Santa does this for very good reason. Make a list, check it many times, revise it, add dates to it (whereby it might be too late 'to do' at which point, then you can, of course, cross it off-bonus!).
  • Christmas greetings.  Cut down on Christmas cards, send some via ecards instead. Still personal enough, but less time expended, still allowing you to keep in touch. Which is clearly the real intent.
  • Gatherings. If you're having get-to-gethers at your place, possibly have a bring and share (pot luck). Make or even purchase a few key things. Frankly people just enjoy the getting together, rarely is the food the full focus.
  • Ask for Help. If you have children, give them tasks. This teaches them how incredibly valuable their input is. If they're little they probably enjoy making the ornaments for the tree (or as gifts). So much more personal and fun.
  • Shop locally. Put on the most comfy shoes (not the cute ones), pack a bag and make a day of it, include coffee breaks at the best café's. Some of the best most unique, personal gifts come from our local, small retailers. Plus who does not want to say they buy local! Santa would be proud!

And on that note, lets have a look at a few great things, Plum can assist with. And remember--it's not all about gift giving, some of it is about just enjoying....

Image

Even if you won't be spending Christmas in Paris..... look like you did! A fun, sweatshirt to keep things easy yet still with a bit of glitz. I love it with the jeans and envision some great pumps, with the jeans cuffed. OR gift one to the traveller in your life.

Soyaconcept Paris pullover $69 (white with sequin 'Paris' lettering)

Image

And of course scarves are so easy to give and always great to receive. Who does not like red at Christmas. This one is fabulous because it's ample size allows it to double as a shawl.

Look wool/acrylic plaid scarf $35 (red plaid or hunter green plaid)

Image

Bags are another brilliant choice.  While one can use this as a regular, every day bag, can be used also as a weekend/travel bag. Comes with a detachable shoulder strap and 2 inner pockets.

Street Level tote $65 $46

In short, try to enjoy the season, the music, the twinkling lights...the general feeling it all invokes. When all else fails, there's always eggnog.
