We've got Feather Fever

One of the biggest trends for spring is feather jewellery. It might seem like a walk on the wild side, but it can actually be very wearable. No doubt about it, a feather necklace or pair of earrings is a statement. So if you’re uncertain, keep the rest of your accessories more minimalist and use a simple outfit as your backdrop.

Don’t be afraid to try feathers on unexpected outfits! (You can do this in the privacy of your own bedroom. If it doesn’t work, no one is the wiser) Just experiment and have fun!

Here is a great example

Big Heart Sweater Available in Black, Blue, Cream, and Grey, $49

I went to our Granville Street location (Granville at 12th) to check out how the gals were showing off all our fabulous feathers. I looove this look! A chunky yet lightweight spring sweater - a little too girly for some with the big red heart - gets a funky boho edge in a snap.

When you get a little more comfortable with feathers, you can go even bolder. Layer your necklaces over a printed maxi dress for an effortlessly original style.

And now for the really fun part! Because we know that embracing a new trend can sometimes be tricky, we at Plum have decided to give you a little help.

We want to give you a gorgeous feather necklace absolutely, completely, 100% FREE

One Day, One Dress, Three Events.

This is the season of patio lunches, garden parties, barbeques, weddings, and so many other fun springtime events! I got inspired to write a post (a cheat sheet, really) showing you how to take one dress through the whole day with three distinct looks.

The dress I picked is Plum’s Polka Dot Print Sheath Dress with a low scoop back in yellow.

For the morning, slip on a pair of comfortable sandals (you want to save those feet for later). I love this dress with a strand of tangerine-coloured wooden beads. Playing around with the colours rather than tons of accessories keeps your look light and fun for a morning event.

Image

In the afternoon, swap the sandals for a low heel in a tan colour, and add some more accessories to offset your stunning dress.

Image
Then finally, for the evening, you can really go all out and punch up your dress with a pair of pumps. Try either a turquoise or a tangerine that coordinates (but doesn’t match) the tone of the accessories above. You’ll look classic and elegant for your night out.

And voila! It can be done: effortless style with no costume changes.

Where do you think a dress should always be worn?

Organize Your Closet

Closet cleaning can be good for your health!

The first step is to create three piles: "yes," "no" and "maybe."

Use three simple questions to thin the herd:
  1. Do I love this?
  2. Is it flattering?
  3. Is this the image that I want to portray?
Other questions might also be:
  • Have I worn this in the last 12 months?
  • Does it fit me any more?
Remember that we change – even some things that still fit might not be you any more and at the risk of giving some cheap psychology, do not try to dress like who you “want” to be – dress for who you are now. It might take a shopping trip and a little help to get there

Back to your closet!

If any answer is "no," then it goes in the "no" pile and obviously you want to keep the “yes” pile!

If the “no” pile contains really good clothes that are not ‘you’ any more but could help someone else who is looking for work and does not have an interview outfit, then contact Dress For Success Vancouver.

For the "maybe" pile, consider creating an archive. This option is for old clothes that you likely will never wear, but which have sentimental value. These items get stored someplace other than your closet. (It is more fun to open the box years later than to look at it every day in your closet.)

Organize the closet into your very own boutique where you can shop your own clothes. Then organize all items into sections by color.

Display pairs of shoes by facing one forward and one backward. This way you can see both the toe and the heal height of the shoes.

Jewellery is a special case but here is a link to what our buyer recommended in a previous post.

Have you turned over your closet this year?

We wanted to have a little fun with a survey since our customers love to tell us about themselves and love a chance to win a pair of Yoga Jeans. BTW: if your first name is Alicia and you live in Calgary you might have won a pair of Yoga Jeans - you probably know by now.

Everyone knows Yoga is popular but it might be surprising that 37% of Plum customers do Yoga on a regular basis!  26% meditate as well.  Calgary women are more likely to volunteer and Vancouver women are more likely to put new soles on their shoes rather than throw them out!  It may not be surprising to our customers but Kelowna has twice as many vegetarians as Calgary.

But maybe all you Yoga practitioners can help someone who isn't quite there yet?  24% of our customers intend on doing Yoga but just have not managed to start yet.

Why not post a few words of encouragement on why Yoga is so important for you ... who knows ... it might be enough to get them started!

Here are the results from our survey questions:

Holiday Messages from You

On December 15, we asked our email list and social media followers to send us a holiday message.

We had over 1200 messages, and more than half gave us permission to post their message.

Here are a few that caught our eye:

Deck my halls with Yoga Jeans,
Fa la la la la la la la la
They're the hottest pants that you've ever seen
Fa la la la la la la la la
Don we now our Canadian apparel
Fa la la la la la la la la
And head out to sing Christmas carols
Fa la la la la la la la la

- from Martha in Delta

'Twas the night before Christmas,
when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;
Katrina was writing her clothing wish list with care,
In hopes that St. Nicholas soon would be there;
The adults were nestled all snug in their beds,
While visions of plum clothing danced in their heads;
And Katrina in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap,
Had just gathered up their presents to wrap,
When out on the lawn there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from the bed to see what was the matter.
Away to the window I flew like a flash,
Tore open the shutters and threw up the sash.
The moon on the breast of the new-fallen snow
Gave the lustre of mid-day to objects below,
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
But a pair of new pants perfect for my pear shaped rear,
I undressed right there so lively and quick,
I knew who they were from, my good friend St. Nick.
I pulled them on heard some hooting and even a whistle,
I turned around and saw St.Nick fly like the down of a thistle.
I heard him exclaim, as he drove out of sight,
"hope you like your pants, cause they fit you just right!"
Merry Christmas to all and to all a happy new year too!

- from Katrina in Vancouver

Christmas is the season for giving, for sharing. Preparing gift baskets filled with treats homemade with loving care. Filling up the birdfeeder and putting out carrot tops for the wild rabbits. And random acts of kindness that make someone's day and put a smile on their face.
