"If I were a boy!"

Theoretically, it was thought, I'd be a boy, named Tom...and no offense to my deceased uncle but, I'm grateful I came out as is. I have to say, I wrote this while listening to Beyoncé which made me think, just how would I dress if I were a man? Unnecessary, because for decades, I've been drawn to men's jeans, t shirts, hats and jackets. Why? Perhaps because, at least with men's jackets, they provided a better fit, thus were my ideal option (and it was the 80's). Happily now I can draw together the structure of menswear with the fun and flair of women’s wear; and be grateful women’s jackets have transformed to better accommodate our actual shapes.

So it is said, we have a gentleman named Beau Brummell, dating back to the 18th century to thank for at least the men's version of the blazer. For us women, the Suffragettes were responsible for giving it meaning to our actual wardrobe; Yves St Laurent and Chanel punctuating it with style! Whoever it was, I'm grateful. Blazers are my go to garment from Sept to May. Instinctively they are paired with pants but they really wear stunningly well with anything imagined! If you love shirts, this all over print with stripe background makes for a fun coordinate.

Kaffe pinstripe jacket (grey stripe) $149

Kaffe pinstripe pants (grey stripe) $119

B.Young printed button down blouse (off white/mustard) $65

I love bringing together my old love of jackets with my new kimono obsession. I find kimono's and poncho's create a nice layering look while simultaneously assisting with fluctuating temperatures and environments. And pattern mixing gives your wardrobe a bit more latitude AND attitude.

Kaffe relaxed check blazer (grey plaid) $139

Kaffe front zip skirt (grey plaid) $79

KW multi plaid print kimono (black) $59

This jacket has the most genius design features with the pleats and back tie! JUST SAY YES TO THE CURVES! I feel like I've waited 3 decades for someone to incorporate this into a design; along with the shawl collar...MWA!!! love it! Looks just smashing with the plaid pants but also would be fun with destroyed jeans OR a fabulous dress. And may I suggest either this sexy wrap or jumpsuit above as options.

Cream blazer (black or brick red) $149

Kaffe checked pant (black/grey/red) $99

Spencer+Shaw ruffle trim wrap dress (black combo) $149

Wasabi+Mint crisscross cropped jumpsuit (black) $75

ImageImage

Welcome back to the 80's with this slightly retro, boyfriend/relaxed fit jacket. Another one of my favourite jackets this season; the one above as it fits in with the most welcome trend of plaid. This also adds a bit of interest from the otherwise somber presence of (albeit my beloved) black. I've paired it above with this body hugging dress as a nice contrast.

Kaffe checked blazer (black/grey/red) $139

Kaffe checked pant (black/grey/red) $99

Spencer+Shaw v neck 3/4 sleeve knit dress (black or merlot) $129

If I was a boy? I haven't seriously thought of this until I recently was listening to that song. Hm...would I want short hair, to always be stoic, graciously open doors, take out garbage or rake leaves?....ok wait...I already do!

What's in your purse?

Until November 13, Plum's BC locations are sponsoring a purse drive for Dress for Success. Simply drop off any gently used, interview, career appropriate purses to one of our BC locations and they will be forwarded to Dress for Success.

What do you think dressing for success looks like? From what I can see it looks individual, personal and polished. Today I had the great honor of attending the Dress for Success luncheon. A room full of mostly women, gathered to support, celebrate, encourage and inspire. Women who have come a long way, and women who mentor others. Listening to the Inspiration Award winner Fiona Hogg speak of her life's journey and how Dress for Success played a key role in helping turn around a very long challenging path, was both eye opening and inspiring.

Dressing for Success means putting your best foot forward often on a new venture, new career, new path. Let's have a look at a few of Plum's career pieces:

Image

The pencil skirt always has a place in the career closet. The above skirt has an outspoken hounds tooth print, a comfortable length and a hidden elastic for easy wear.

Plum pencil skirt with hidden elastic (purple or red) $69 now $55

Shirts are to your office wardrobe what the calculator is to the accountant...although they need not be so stark as white. Without much effort your career pieces can have a spark of fun as well.  In this case a light, fresh, bird print puts the fun in function.

acapella long sleeve button front blouse (White with grey bird print) $82

It's important that what you wear to work be comfortable and functional. This is a dress that has as much comfort and fit as it does style. Features cap sleeves and princess seams that help accentuate and flatter.

Simone princess seam v neck dress (black or merlot) $139

And finally in honor of the purse drive, perhaps you're looking for a new addition. Looks like real leather but nothing of the bovine variety died for this. Love the cross hatch body and large button fastener. Inside internal zip pocket as well as 2 zip pockets and assorted other small pockets.

Catwalk woven cross body bag (pewter) $69

Dress for Success was founded in 1997 and since it's inception has helped countless women, when all else felt hopeless, get back on their feet and find direction. Plum is Vancouver's founding sponsor and has been a proud sponsor for 15 years. Congratulations to this years very deserving 'Inspiration Award Recipient' Fiona Hogg. Suitable jobs!

Category:

Picture this...You're meeting with a real estate agent for the first time about to view various properties in the hopes of making a purchase. If you live in Vancouver, this would be substantial money (an understatement). Your Real Estate agent stands in front of you, she smiles warmly..but you look down, threads hang from her suit and the lining of the hem is buckling...You worry...not because she isn't attentive, seems to recycle and drives a hybrid (lol), about her attention to detail. Plum's attention to detail is never in question. Suits that can stand next to any internationally known, high end label at more than fair prices.

Image

I adore this suit. It's only drawback is, if you're giving a presentation, there is a distinct possibility no one will hear what's been said, so distractingly gorgeous. A stunning addition to your professional wardrobe, with a slight feminine edge.

Tobias double breasted jacket with flared hem (black or pewter) $230

Tobias slim pant with welt pocket (black or pewter) $110

Image

Maybe it's your first day on the job and it's a traditional suit style you need. This is Plum's latest two button. Just a superior fitting jacket worn here with the matching, paneled, back slit skirt. An office wardrobe basic.

Tobias two button jacket with peak lapels (Merlot and black) $215

Tobias pencil skirt (Merlot and black) $95

ImageImage

Here is an absolutely wonderful addition to anyone's wardrobe. On the left worn with a pencil skirt and Kersh cardi for more of an office look, on the right suitable for casual/weekend times. A wonderful, wool blend mix. Yet light weight enough to be layered and worn as outerwear. A really versatile piece.

Tobias draped front boiled wool coat (black, peacock or purple) $225

ImageImage

And some co-ordinates to go with your suits. Because embroidered anything is very big right now. From scarves, to jackets to even footwear, you'll find embroidery. This sweet top is allover embroidered georgette lace. And a shell top is an easy match with any suit.

Kersh capsleeve lace top (cream) $65

Plum sleeveless top with high low hem (black or pink) $69

Exchange 'Real Estate Agent' with Doctor, Interior Decorator, Financial Advisor...many professions necessitate flawless presentations requiring the client to trust in, at times, risky endeavors. Stepping down from the seriousness of work attire, however, jackets are also ok on weekends, just double check for the chocolate croissant stains before you step into that meeting on Monday!

Just remember, the quality of your work need not hang by a thread!

It all adds up...

Category:

Don't forget to use the $20 off min purchase coupon (September 17 - 27) NOTE our coupon can also be used online...still in effect!

Can the right suit get you hired or the sought after promotion? Probably not, but it can make sure you're not ruled out. In other words, if it's between you and another candidate...and it's neck and neck....why not choose the one with the flawless attire? Just a minor detail that we'd rather not consider, however real. I've had substandard quality shoes fail me at a wedding...why put yourself in this position at a crucial time. Why not walk confidently in quality.

ImageImageImage

Here's a jacket (and it's co-ordinates) that looks polished yet looses no points to being 'run of the mill'...Tobias always includes unexpected, interesting features to help you stand out. Because different is not only ok but great, distracting (for all the wrong reasons) maybe not.

Tobias one button hem side flare jacket (black, burgundy) $210

Tobias pant with front and back welt pocket (black, burgundy) $115

Tobias high waist pencil skirt (black, burgundy) $92

ImageImage

While pairing your jacket with opposites such as destroyed denim on the weekend is standard in style now, matching for work means it might be best to invest in the actual mates. It just seems a touch off when the jacket is worn with a bottom that is of similar fabrication but 'not' quite.  Colours do not always match therefore, maybe best to get the matching pant or skirt making for a complete, pulled together look. Add the creative part with the blouses, tanks and accessories.

Tobias button front shawl collar jacket (black, charcoal) $195

Tobias relaxed trouser (black, charcoal) $98

Image

While the blazer is the standard for most office settings, there's no reason why you can't veer off course a bit with this slick looking faux leather piece. Smart, sleek and a bit edgy put together with a pencil skirt, heels and a simple necklace would make this a great piece to do double duty for weekends as well.

Fate faux leather and rayon front jacket (black) $129

Gone are the days when showing your own personal style meant, you just did not fit in, it just was not done. Not only is it acceptable in most cases to add a bit of 'you', it indicates you don't just follow a path, you create one.

You know what they say...you are what you eat wear...inspire yourself.
