Some people are compelled by all things bold; does that make the rest of us just plain old beautiful? :) In fashion bold doesn't necessarily mean gaudy, loud or extravagant. It can mean bright, different or stand out style. I'm ok with fitting into either category, thank you very much! So, which is it, are you bold...or beautiful...or maybe you're AMBI? ...BOLD-IFUL!
This beautiful little dress from the front of the email, really...everyone should have in their summer wardrobe. The shirring on the bodice makes it super comfortable for nearly any size chest, a flowey skirt just below knee level and a pleasant floral pattern. And when August moves into September, a bit cooler, adding a jean jacket makes it a lovely combo.
I think I'd file these two tops in beautiful file! Well, no, you'd not want to file them anywhere, you'd want to wear them, maybe to a garden party.
While this might not be red patent leather or rose gold embossed embroidery....it's certainly a fearless, unique design. An artistic deconstructed look that boldly says...HERE I AM! The top, a linen composition, so needed, so now! It's partner, the bottom, which invites free, lively movements, is also linen.
This is a gorgeous little mixed pattern transitional piece. Lighthearted enough for now with some great warm autumn shades for the pallet of the fall.
The hue of this dress (think...shades of a mirrored lake)is far from bold, but, it's design is certainly conspicuous, however, also practical. Note the oversized pocket and adjustable shoulder ties. All the while being it's breezy, linen self! Because you know, we are so not finished with summer, not even close.
It's clearly ok to be both bold and beautiful but they're not like Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen...they're not twins, not always together! We all have that one bold friend who wears what's most garish (gosh, maybe that's me) or that stunning friend who can stop traffic in the middle of Swindon's roundabout. I've thought about this as I put on the boldest, darkest eyeliner...(gee, if I put this on for me, curious that I can't even see it unless I look in a mirror). Maybe just maybe it's ok to be bold in ones head or memory. Bold is in the 'mind' of the be-bolder!

One of the most iconic figures of our time, Farrokh Bulsara...better known as FREDDIE MERCURY, wore white pants with great regularity in his performances, partly to do with his following of Zoroastrianism, partly it just looks great! Other famous people known for wearing white pants...Diane Keaton, Steve McQueen, Colonel Sanders...oh and Mr. Clean of course! Needless to say it's the completely unbiased colour (or non-colour) that matches everything, plus, it's perfect for summer heat because of it's reflect ability. So if you're staying put, waiting on the impending heat of the season, or heading to the Bahamas...white is an obvious choice! White...it's a kind of magic!
As you can see, it looks great with this sweet, summery, boho, semi-retro looking top. Just a swingy, easy breezy presentation. White is also another great alternative to dresses for more upscale occasions. Add some bling or silver for maximum impact!
Yoga highrise skinny ankle jean (white) now $40 off
worn with
Millibon shoulder pleat blouse (2 colours) $75
Also great with linen. The unstructured top above makes a great companion for these pants for casual outings. However in the event you find yourself invited out for dinner, if need be, change shoes and toss on a long pendant. Voila, instant chic!
Mio Meli back button linen tunic (olive, taupe or white) $109
Other super cute options in white, the above short/overalls. Again, decide if you need to layer based on the weather, either a bold tank top or a super light weight jacket, or both! A great alternative to just shorts.
Doe+Rae 3 pocket overall (white) $35
worn with
Mio Meli hooded linen jacket (black, pink or white) $125
So, if 'all' white is just too bold for you, try this! The window pane pattern is just enough of another injection of print, but bright enough to expel too much sun...ok maybe that's a stretch, make sure to wear a wide brim hat. But for me, this just cries out for bold, pink or red lipstick, the hat and brunch! Enjoy!
Verty tie front check dress (mustard or white) $95
OF COURSE you're a fashionista...was there ever a question? Try your white pants with this fun t shirt, and don't forget the bold gold sandals. Because, you know...gold goes with everything..gardening, cake frosting, Netflix and a huge bowl of popcorn (popcorn is white-hmm)!
B Young t shirt $29
Nina Rossi cropped pants (black or khaki) $ 34 (sold in store only)
So what's the big deal about white? In so many cultures and religions it represents, hope, peace, new beginnings and, as in Zoroastrianism, purity. And did you know, in dreams white supposedly represents happiness at home; in the late 19th century, white 'lab coats' were introduced as a way to inject hope into the medical profession and white appears as the title in many songs, White Wedding by Billy Idol, Nights in White Satin by the Moody Blues and even White Queen by Queen. Amazing how such a supposed non colour can be so impactful!

Que sera sera...Ah, the weather, like the ex...forever unpredictable and unreliable! Oh! Were you thinking of Doris Day? Of course you were. Having appeared in 38 films in her career, Doris Day who died recently at age 97, was well known as both a singer and actress. But let's not forget her girl next door image and the freckled bright smile that was pervasive in her films. Her fashion image, perhaps not always one she loved, was one of clean cut, pristine and fresh. But it was a look that she mastered and will frankly never go out of style. Unlike the weather, it's consistent and easy to procure. Let me show you a few modern takes:
I'm fairly convinced that if Doris were a young woman today, she'd likely opt for a similar look. Simply fresh and sporty, at times presenting a tom boy image (Calamity Jane). However, maybe she'd wear saddle shoes...does anyone remember those? First introduced in 1906 by Spalding, designed and intended to create added reinforcement at the instep, for indoor sports; they quickly gathered steam and popularity over decades that followed.
Dreamers v neck pullover sweater regularly (6 COLOURS) $75 until Monday May 20 $55
The sweetheart look, was an image I'm sure she grew weary of over the years, perhaps because of not wanting to be tied to one image. Regardless, even today, it's easy if the goal is to look pulled together. A look represented by minimal accessories, precise makeup and very well coifed hair. I'm sure I'd sooner find myself a world class, medal winning Olympian before I could pull this off, lovely as it is!
Bandana, heart necklace find in store ~ selection may vary by location
Motion embroidered t shirt (oatmeal) $55
Soya Concept skinny pant with bottom zipper (army or powder pink) $135
The dress on the left is indicative of a style and fit that would have been common to see on women of her era, very fitted and defined. Timeless, effortless chic, and perfect for a professional setting. While the dress on the right is just a sweet, simple summer dress, complete with adjustable spaghetti straps and a shirred back panel.
Spencer+Shaw capsleeve dress (black herringbone) $119
Spencer+Shaw fit and flare dress (red/white) $99
Today's version of yesterday's pedal pushers is the crop pant (on the left). Perhaps she would have worn them with ballet flats or even penny loafers...the penny is gone but the loafer remains! Oh but I digress (as I often do). And to the right another sweet fresh, summer pick, distinctly feminine, yet simple.
Cream front seam slit pant (corn yellow or white) $109
Dreamers gathered back dress (multi stripe) sale price $65
Find Plum's hats in store ~ selection varies
Joseph D'Arezzo large round wicker shopper $59
Hats were also a key part of her image, from straw hats with a quaint flower bunch to pill box to dramatic wide brims to leopard print designs. They will never go out of style, it's merely a matter of what suits our face shape and what we're drawn to. And of course one of the hot trends of the summer is the straw bag.
Doris Day represented an era that was full of restrictions and fairly well defined expectations of women and society in general. However, the style itself should not be overlooked, as it's freshness and ease endures and emerges as a steady consistent uncomplicated look each summer.

I can't really say... in my case, as my dear Mother is, well...you know...with the ancestors..or...examining the radishes from below, immortally challenged....OK OK PASSED AWAY!! AND it really is not a competition of cool...IS IT? And if your Mother IS cooler than you, well, that's fine too! After all, she's had far more time to curate her coolness! BUT if she's not the avant-garde, funky one, why not bring her shopping, make out like she IS the cool one and seek her advice...'gee Mom, what would you wear this with?'(we love to dispense advice). I'm not taking sides here but...pumping up Mom's ego, kind of makes YOU the cool one!
Why is this cool, you ask? Because you like it, and you're cool. 100% cotton, and the eyelet zig zag pattern on the front mean, it's airy and breathable! The fluttery sleeves add to the feminine feel!
Point Zero cap sleeve shell top (amethyst or white) $65
Cream twill pant (white) $95 (limited sizes remaining)
Turquoise, the stone itself is well known for it's healing powers...that and a mother's warm embrace! Buy this for her and you'll get the hug...win win!! Seriously, it's a cheerful, outstanding hue in 100% linen. Another textile imbued with a light airy texture!
Mio Meli crop linen blouse (black, taupe, turquoise or white) $85
B Young crop pant (black) $89
This is definitely, both the epitome of casual carefree and alluring! A varied, open weave top, in a very soft shade stripe, to be worn off the shoulder, or don't! It's nice to sport a look that's both easy and comfortable, yet still fashionable for weekend brunch and varied activities.
Ganji stripe linen/cotton blouse (blue or pink stripe combo) $55
Jag Ainsley Bermuda short (grey, navy or jungle palm) $69
These fresh, light efflorescent dresses would be simply brilliant for Sunday brunch with Mom, for either of you. Completing the look with a hat, has all the appearance of 'I just came from teaching Sunday school'.
Mio Meli oversize printed dress (olive print or white print) $115
M printed dress (white/blue) $95
Sometimes you catch your Mother flirting and it's a jaw dropping experience, even if it's with your Dad! (Am I right?) Come on, that's probably how you came to be! Anyway let her be! Mom deserves to have her fun too! This top is just as cute (if not cuter) from the back! An easy transition piece for office to outdoor patios! Inside where there's AC or outside with a shawl draped over one shoulder!
Soya Concept strappy shell top (sand combination) $45
Soya Concept drawstring pant (aloe green or toffee brown) $85
Skip the flowers, they simply wilt and die! These adorable, and effortless pants are bouquet enough. Needless to say they need nothing elaborate on top. Wear with a simple tank top, add a crop cardi and change of shoes to slides. I love the added belt loops; get creative, wear a scarf through the loops, or one of your necklaces! (Find something on sale right now at Plum).
M printed linen pant (olive) $65
B Young tank top (6 colours) $29
I could totally envision my own Mother having worn this dress, 'back in the day'! And back in the day (abundantly popular in the 50's) the 'house dress' was designed to be convenient, comfortable as well as attractive, while 'Mom' took care of her house duties. Bring this up to current times, with a very red hot pair of Mary Jane shoes, bold lipstick and no other makeup; or even a casual, simple espadrille would work just fine and hair pulled up in a top knot. Maybe add a belt for more definition and a wide brim hat and evenings, add a jean jacket. Regardless of how you connect the dots, the print has ubiquitous appeal.
RD button front dress (black dot) $64
What fun things do you love to do with your Mom? Shop for shoes, makeup or simply shop? Maybe camping or crafting? Or perhaps she likes to clean your clock with a fierce game of Scrabble. Just remember, while both are 4 letter words...C-O-O-L is worth 6 points, where K-I-N-D is worth 9. Something to think about!!
For me, every day is Mothers day!!

Arguably, December hosts the most parties and festivities of all the months. So many that it feels like sleeping in my festive attire is the most efficient, time saving option. But my 20's are long gone so not only do I change, I also go home! I've come so far! There are so many types of events, daytime, work/party, family, charity, church...it means that we might struggle to find 'one' garment to suit all. Although, with a few tweaks (not twerks), it might be possible. The voice in my head says 'One sparkly, festive outfit? Really?' Sounds like something I say to my children... 'you may only have one'! But perhaps because we're grown ups, we 'can' have more than one!
Most often associated with wealth and luxury, velvet is an often chosen textile for garments at this magical time of year. Thought to have been first produced thousands of years ago, this unmistakably, richly woven pile is thankfully within reach of all of us now, unlike hundreds of years ago when it would have been most likely produced for only nobility. I think we do feel somewhat like aristocracy when we wear it. Either of these great dresses are proving to be quite popular because of the marriage between, texture, design and fit.
Another often chosen fabric choice at this time is lace. It's specific origins appear to be disputable, but it did have some of it's beginnings with the church, clergy and then hundreds of years later, Queen Victoria was married in lace, thus instituting an unstoppable trend. Hundreds of years ago, the delicate ornamental web-like patterns were made using silk, linen and even gold threads. Needless to say it represents a certain elevation of style. This dress is simply a classic!
Accessories, of course, at this time play a huge part in assembling an outfit. Kimonos can count as an accessory or, worn in spring as outerwear. No matter how you look at it, Kimonos have evolved into a staple. Add to this the refreshing, yet elegant look of silver and you've created an image that's stylish, but also can be easily changed to daytime casual with one simple coordinate change.
All jewellery is sold in store! Head into a Plum location near you to find the drool worthy selection!
This little top, offers a lot of pizzazz and fashion forwardness! (is that a word? It is now). The Wall Street Journal stated that 9 out of 10 companies hosted a holiday party in 2012. Over 25% were held in the office. Which means, you may not have time to change...a lot. Thus, wearing something that can easily convert from work to wow, is probably as easy as pulling up your hair and adding some more engaging accessories.
Jewellery is sold in store only and there vast selection to suit every jewellery obsessed fan!
Another option, above this very soft, comfortable knit top, when worn off the shoulder, paired with these, edgy, coated, leather look pants, clearly provides a more sexy, downtown look. OR, wear it with a wide belt and a skirt or palazzo pants and a necklace. And for daytime or any time, covering the shoulders and pair with jeans and a blazer.
Untangling strings of lights that no longer work, getting a drive home from your boss from the office party, and visits from crazy relatives that you haven't seen all year......yes, that's the Christmas season....oh and eggnog...let's not forget the twelve days of eggnog!!!
