3 Tips to Transition to Spring

While it’s too early to wear spring fashion from head to toe, we can’t help but want to put on something lighter and brighter. With the official start of the season over a month away, here are three tips on how to start transitioning your wardrobe over to spring:

Image

  1. Brighter Colours: Start by incorporating more vivid colours into your outfits. Here we paired the Plum Kimono Cardigan with some dark denim for a pop of colour. For later in spring, we paired it with some white boyfriend jeans to brighten it up.
  2. Lighter Layers: Lighten up your layers with some spring fabrics. To wear the Kimono  now, we layered it over a thick cotton top but you could even layer it over a longer sleeve shirt if the weather is cooler.  Later, wear it over a simple ribbed tank like we've shown below.
  3. Updated Accessories:  Update your accessories to satisfy the spring trends you’re coveting. In small doses, we can fully embrace the coming season. Now, we signaled the shift to spring with a fringed pendant necklace. For later in spring, some fine layered charm necklaces complete a breezy look.

As past curator of the Vancouver Museum, and current curator for the Society of the Museum of Original Costume, Ivan has always been a collector.

As a child, he purchased antiques from thrift shops, catalogued them in his garage, then spent hours at the library to determine the exact age of the items. When he was just a teenager, he bought his first item of clothing: a black lace dress from the thirties. Now, he jokes that he sleeps in the dining room because the boxes have overtaken every room in his East Van house. He has amassed one of the largest private collections in all of Canada.

Fashion lovers flock to his events--not just to see a rare glimpse of his collection, but also hear the unique insights only he can provide. When Ivan is speaking, anecdotes about how and where he acquired each item are peppered in with his expert knowledge on the evolution of women’s fashion from 1650. His fashion shows are filled with stories from the original women who wore the garments that he could only hear at the original transaction. All told without shortage of humour and passion.

Ivan Sayers is hosting, after all.

A Rare Live Model Vintage Fashion Show

February 22 at Vancouver's St. Andrew's-Wesley Church, 2-4pm

Explore the history of fashion for social activists at "Radical Rags", a rare live model vintage fashion show. Hosted by fashion historian, Ivan Sayers, live models feature looks that your suffragette great-grandmothers fought to wear up until the clothes worn by the peace-loving protestors of the 60s and 70s. As the models parade during the show, the social change brought on by these activists becomes as revealing as the fashion.

Get any style of Yoga Jeans for just $95 (reg. $110-$120)

for 5 days only!

Offer valid Thursday, February 6th to Monday, February 10th.

Since Second’s Yoga Jeans were introduced in Plum stores, they’ve become a fan favourite. Nothing compares to putting a pair on—you can immediately feel the difference in comfort between a pair of Yoga Jeans and your regular denim.

“Not only does the 4-way stretch allow for more flexibility in movement, the 92% shape memory (versus an industry average of only 64%) keeps them looking good,” says Eric Wazana, the creator of Yoga Jeans. Skinny jeans, in other words, stay looking like a skinny. Plus, women feel held in by the high rises.

But what's really created such loyal fans is that the comfort factor is equally matched when it comes to style. Now try them for the first time (or find a new style to love) during our 5 day sale!

Yoga Jeans are known for their contoured waistbands that curve with our bodies so that the back doesn't gape open when we bend or move. This Second’s Yoga Jean (reg. $120) has a double button on a wider waistband.

The Second Highrise Skinny Yoga Jean (reg. $120) with zipper ankle detail is one of the most popular Yoga Jeans styles.

Second’s Highrise Straight Yoga Jean (reg. $120) has a slim leg and tone-on-tone stitching for a style that’s easy to dress up or wear to work.

Second’s Highrise Flare Yoga Jean (reg. $118) is on trend and updated with a clean rinse indigo wash with mustard stitching.

Second’s Highrise Yoga Bootcut (reg. $110) is long and lean in the rinse indigo and the high rise holds you in.

What do you love about your Yoga Jeans?

PS: Did I mention that Yoga Jeans are made right here in Canada?

Mavi Denim Trends for Spring 2014

There isn’t much in fashion as dependable as denim.  An icon in fashion history, denim is in everyone’s closet for good reason-it’s classic but updates every season.

For Spring 2014, we are moving towards lighter washes and true blue jeans. Distressed, faded, frayed and ripped jeans are highly styled and fun. Even though denim is looking rougher than in seasons past, it doesn’t mean that we are reverting to more casual styles. The look for the season is a hybrid between polished and edgy, sporty and refined. But because denim is always up to your own interpretation of style, how will you be wearing it?

Image

The light wash on Mavi’s cropped denim jacket works well with this season’s shortened, fitted style. It’s the perfect companion over printed rayon dresses.

Image

The Mavi's Samantha jean jacket is available in three different washes: a faded black called Slate $98 (as shown above), Bleach Random $98 (for those craving a lighter wash) and Dark R. Vintage $108 (for a classic dark denim).

Image

Mavi’s denim vest was introduced into our closets last spring/summer, but this year they are set to surge. The denim vest adds some edge when contrasted with short pretty dresses.

Image

We’ve seen the layered look on street style blogs but Mavi’s contrast sleeve denim jacket with detachable hood doesn’t have any awkward bulk.

Image

Mavi's Emma boyfriend jeans aren’t just reserved for casual weekend looks. Style them with heels and a red lip to polish up their rough-and-tumble look.
