IT'S FRIDAY FOR 4 DAYS--BLACK Friday that is....head into a nearby Plum location and check out the deals...such as 20% off all jewellery and 40% off regular priced suit jackets! (NOV.22 TO 25)

Why do we need a new black? After all, it's the happiest colour I KNOW! In fact, I couldn't love it more if it was blackerBut why do we need something more new than black? Lets go back a few decades when black was the go to colour for those considered 'in' and 'chic'! Designers, however, felt it was time for another colour that would grab our attention. The phrase was then stolen from, '40 is the new 30' and so on. So what is the new black!? YOU! Yes, whatever YOU choose. Put 'it' on, 'YOU-IFY' it and THAT my beautiful friends, is the new black! Now go and find your new black! (I'll be happy to help! :)

Listen Beyoncé, one way to step up the game on your outfit, is put a blazer on it!  Regardless of what it's worn 'with', the jacket gives the look a more stylish appearance. So, if you're looking to help your jeans look a bit more fashion than function, this is a good option. And all regular priced suit jackets are 40% off from Nov.22-25.

While this is not part of the sale, I couldn't help but show it. Gem colours bounce in and out of popularity but now is an excellent time to go for something very much not black. And in the form of a turtleneck, you cannot go wrong with this investment. Dress it up, dress it down or simply layer it for warmth. This is such a rich, regal hue that works so well with opulent jewellery!

Long sleeve turtleneck (6 colours) $36

This very in Spencer + Shaw dress is part of the sale that starts on Thursday (oooh AND select Spencer+Shaw dresses are 50% off).  The beauty of this dress is that, it's edgy, fresh and unique and it really doesn't cry out for accessories. BUT if you feel compelled try some really equally bold earrings! All jewellery is 20% off from Nov.22-25

OH, and let us not forget accessories. Sometimes a scarf can go a long way taking a great outfit to the next level of style and giving your look a unique flavor! This lovely little compact faux leather bag will keep you organized, AND it comes in 4 other colours. Scarves, purses and jewellery are 20% off Nov.22-25! Which means you can take a simple LBD and make it into something very you!

KW rose print scarf

Faux leather handbag (6 colours)

I have heard 'giving back is the new black' - 'kindness is the new black' - 'grey is the new black' - 'love is the new black' or my personal favourite 'old is the new black'.  I don't know, I just don't think black ever gets old. Not in my life!

Wouldn't it be fantastic if we could wear PJ's, robe and slippers to church...or our scuba gear to meet with an insurance agent....well....you CAN but I'm wondering how seriously you'd be taken. Would anyone hear a word you were saying? In a minor way, on a daily basis, we get the sideways glances...on a grander scale, fashion shaming IS NOW A THING! In a perfect world, we'd not be judged by our attire...however, it's not and we are!  The latest fashaming report I recently viewed was towards our inspirational Malala...I wonder what's next, the Dalai Lama's robe is too 'ROBE-Y'!!?? We are constantly scrutinized for minor fashion infractions. BUT on at least one day we can be sure ANYTHING goes...Halloween...So let's go forth, have some fun...be creative.  I promise not to judge your fireman/witch/bunny costume!

So while you're flying through the city on your way from personnel meeting to party...you'll find this dress converts easily from night time to pretty much any time.

Final Touch seamed mid length dress (black) $69

Something wicked this way comes....or..maybe that was just your awesomeness that flew by. Isn't this stunning? Coated to look like the finest leather, drape front with zipper pockets. Don't save this for only one day of the year though!

BLVD drapy front coat (black) $110

Image

If you're on the fence about whether to dress up for the day, or not....easy...wear a t shirt of a cat wearing a costume! OR, put on a head band with cat ears, slide into those sleek looking pants and don't forget the tail!

Bear Dance optical cat (black) $35

M Chunky knit cardigan (brick) $95

Cream Carla coated jeans (black) $149

Something very medieval/damsel about this dress with its big, romantic looking sleeves. Try this with some patterned tights or hose and over the knee boots. Plum has some fabulous jewellery that would totally finish the look.

Wasabi + Mint bell sleeve mini dress (hunter green or black) $79

Black really appears to be the most popular colour...for witches, and other mortals! Clearly, it sets off accessories so well, for starters, matches everything. Very light, romantic, ethereal top, however, it is also lined.

Soya Concept lined georgette blouse (black) $69

I lecture my ten year old as she merrily skips away to school with a hole in her pants the size of her head and hair that looks like she slept under the bed...not on it....as I contentedly don my distressed jeans...'YOU'RE NOT LEAVING THE HOUSE LIKE THAT'!! Oh the irony!

If white was the only colour in existence or straight was the only shape. Just think... sunsets would be blindingly white, rainbows or red lipstick would be non existent and my beloved black...gone? (gasp!)  What about straight...no more curly hair, round emoji's or forget about envying Beyonce or Jlo's posterior! A world without variation, vibrant colour or shape. Impossible, disturbingly dull, depressing and unthinkable. AND thankfully, just not how it actually is! Let's look at some colours and shapes:

A post shared by Plum (@plumclothing) on

Talk about shape. This is a great silhouette for walking into fall. And of course Yoga jeans are the best of them. Really authentic denim finish, but the bonus...so comfortable you could sleep in them. But why...better to strut in them!

Another one of my personal favourite colours is grey. Often overlooked and frowned upon by it's resemblance to fog and gloominess...however, it doesn't conjure up images of funeral processions or witches hats like it's cousin black, and still serves as a sleek backdrop for other colours to coordinate with. You name it, it will match! And shape? That's all you!

Simone sleeveless a-line dress (black, grey, plum or silver) $135

And how is this for colour? The Kersh cardigan, comes in seven luscious fall colours. And of course the beauty of the cardigan is that it transfers so seamlessly from season to season. Layer it under a jacket, belt it or just bring it along 'just in case'. Or buy one for a friend who's always cold!

Kersh ribbed waist cardigan (7 colours) $58

Still not ready to abandon the white? There is no reason to do so. When worn with any other colour, white has the ability to bring out the best in all coordinating colours. This beautiful blouse is simply crying out for a fabulous necklace and an arm full of bangles.

acapella long sleeve blouse with neck tie (black or ecru) $79

Fall colours ...easy fresh style #yvrfashion

A post shared by Plum (@plumclothing) on

If you're simply not able to hone in on one colour of choice, this top is a good solution, comprised of the majority of the fall pallet all in one. A simple, easy style with a modern print, somewhat looking like a close up, pixilated photo.

acapella shell top with curved hem (blue or orange print) $55

Colours, shapes, sizes and differences...I cannot imagine life without vibrant red strawberries, my black Labrador retriever, pink pearl erasers or my favourite berry that only comes in blue.. like life without music. And for anyone who believes that creating more variations on something obliterates the original; think about this...white does not diminish because of the presence of black, it's enhanced by it. And vise versa!

What's blacker than black?

What's blacker than black? Please let me know if you find something as I'm a big 'void of colour' fan. At the risk of looking like I'm attending a funeral daily, I attempt to infuse other elements as I find it's a sensationally easy way to integrate separates. That being said, they say ones colour preference is a key to our personality. White, for instance, frequently implies calm, innocence and simplicity.  I love white but I don't possess any of those qualities. They (whoever they is) say we often feel colours more than see them. Let's get touchy feely then:

Image

With all the elegance of a white swan, this beautiful top will make you flow with grace, or...make you feel like one. Why this is such a sought after style? White literally will go with every other colour; makes for a fresh style when paired with jeans but easily can go from fun to function when paired with a pencil skirt and very trans-seasonal.

Kersh cap sleeve lace top (cream) $65

Image

By contrast red has a feel of power, strength, impulsiveness and boldness. And perhaps you're looking to inject energy or positivity into your life.  In many eastern cultures it's the symbol for good luck. This would be the ideal colour of choice in which case. Not many other colours turn heads in the way red does.

Very J curved hem t shirt (charcoal, off white or wine) $59 now $42

Image

Gazing up at a clear blue sky, often creates a sense of calm and relaxation. This is one of blue's main qualities, along with reliability, inner security and sense of confidence. This dress steps out of these qualities a bit into a more forward thinking, creative place with it's flowey, gathered front.

Simone scoop neck tunic dress (black, burgundy or teal) $110 now $79

Image

Grey, an often overlooked and viewed as dull, colour has more than meets the eye with qualities it brings. Grey is dependable, and practical but also elegant and refined. And how to look like a super hero in this fabulous poncho? Add this great belt for definition and don't shy away from a pendant or even an infinity scarf.

Soya Concept Polonia poncho (charcoal) $89

Image

Last but not least my favourite pick; I laughingly say implies seriousness, authority and responsibility (one out of three isn't bad). Conversely, can also display a more 'I'm with the band' look. The above dress is a very fitting seasonal piece with the burnout velvet texture and swing shape, which helps downplay the severity of black.

Kersh velvet burnout swing mini dress (black) $79

Charcoal is beautiful to an artist because it's his tool to creating artwork, green is beautiful to a gardener because it's his passion, yellow to the bus driver as she drives her children to school....but when we all look up at a rainbow, we all smile....

Coming from a good spot...

COUPON TIME! Don't forget... here (you still have until Oct.16).

$20 off a regular priced clothing or accessories purchase of $95.

Do you know where your jeans come from and how they're manufactured? If they're made with some level of integrity? There's no expectation to keep your jeans for all of perpetuity...but, it's good to have things that do last and are made with environmental care. Dish has created FOREVER BLACK; made from a blend of recycled and sustainable fibers with the industry's lowest pigment transfer to date; a patent pending color-lock technology...(take that to the bank of Canada Mr. Prime Minister).  Plum carries some of the top denim brands, Mavi, Dish and Yoga for some very good reasons...sustainability, design and durability.

Image

There is nothing that won't go with these jeans. Pair with any footwear, jacket, poncho or top...And when buying something you wear frequently, buy in 3's...'one to wear, one to wash, and one waiting to dry' ...maybe that's just for bra's! I think this would work with jeans as well! ;)

DISH forever black (31 inch inseam) $132

Image

These Yoga jeans are super cute...but 'cute' doesn't totally cut it when it comes to our carbon footprint does it? Yoga jeans are made here in Canada. So, you can be cute and thoughtful at the same time!  Yoga jeans are so well made and superior fitting, they feel like custom made. (and you don't have to do Yoga or change a tire in them, just feel like you could)!

YOGA ankle skinny Miami jean $120

Mavi has worked to create a system to produce finishes by which they use significantly less water and dyes all the while never loosing the value of quality design and fit. Don't be afraid to try the distressed look. Try a crisp blazer or white shirt and knee high boots to balance out the casual nature of the weathered denim design.

Mavi Alexa ankle used ripped vintage (28" inseam) $118 sale price $79

Just yesterday my 9 year old asked me..."if you're not dismayed are you 'mayed'"? Believe me, you'll totally be 'mayed' by choosing any of these premium denim brands;the exceptional fit, design and the care they take in production. Because if your passion for caring for the planet meets your fashion passion...it will truly feel good to slip these on!
