Plum’s Perfect 10 is a collection of 10 items that we love. Our tenth and final selection of this series is the Tobias black pencil skirt. Get down to business with this office staple, and after your nine-to-five, wear it overtime by changing your top and accessories and trading your flats for heels.

Image

Work it during the week--the black pencil skirt looks polished and professional whether your career is creative or corporate.  Show off how you’re detail-oriented by tucking in your top and adding a belt.

The weekly grind is out of mind with this evening look. Glitzy accessories and a sky high heel take this skirt out of the work-wear world. The black pencil skirt has flattering fit to accentuate your curves and waist so wear it long after you punch out.

2 Personalities, 2 Careers, 1 Jacket

Category:

A jacket can be creative or corporate, without sacrificing style or comfort.  The Tobias One Button Blazer in brown works the trend where the jacket’s cut is slightly shorter in the back and longer in the front. The one button closure also gives a flattering shape at the waist.

Image

When put over a simple ivory crossover Top and skinny jeans, the jacket elevates the style of the outfit, making the look more structured without sacrificing comfort.  (Lauren is wearing the Mavi Alexa skinnies in Mid-Vintage.) Suede heels and a canvas and leather convertible bag add personality, an asset in creative fields such as marketing and design. You will be relaxed and comfortable without losing any authority or credibility because the jacket pulls the look together.

Image

If you need a professional look, wear the jacket with the coordinating slim pants, and a top with a pop of colour like this Plum t-shirt with gathered neckline.  Accessories such as this floral print quilted purse, a statement necklace and metallic shoes will add personality and show that you are not only on trend, but also media savvy and a creative thinker.

Many people resist wearing a jacket but it’s actually a key piece in your wardrobe that works in any work environment, for any personality. Add colour and texture to suit your mood and environment, and pull your look together with a great jacket!

For most of us, buying an entirely new wardrobe every time a new season rolls around just isn't a viable option. How do you stay stylish and current without a complete overhaul? It isn't necessarily about spending more money, it's about taking a new approach to shopping. Shopping with purpose means making deliberate, conscious choices about the clothing you buy. Evaluate your needs (and wants!) at the beginning of each season, set a realistic budget, and then choose the items you want to welcome home to your wardrobe. This shopping strategy is the best way to take a tired wardrobe and bring it back to life!

To get the most bang+confidence+compliments for your buck, find items that take on a completely new look when paired differently - something that can be dressed up and dressed down. My double duty pick this season? The coloured blazer! Right on trend without being "trendy," surprisingly versatile, and a variation on office wear that is fun! What could be finer for spring?

What's your go-to shopping strategy? How are you planning to put it to work this spring?

As always, I love to hear from you here, on our Facebook page, or on Twitter @PlumClothing

Coats

"Your coat is your car." This quote has been sticking in my mind for months now (seriously, I've been saving this one up since August). It is a perfect and simple truth. A good coat takes you everywhere and, chances are, you will spend a great deal of time in it.

Image

So naturally, when choosing your coat, it makes sense to look for a classic style, like the one picture above. While it borrows from the very current military style, the clean, simple lines and subtle colour ensure the timelessness of this piece.

ImageImage

A coat with a convertible funnel neck (left) or a similarly high neck (right) is also a savvy move. If you've ever been caught out in a Canadian winter without a scarf off, you know why.

Equally important when you're choosing your coat is quality, as a carefully constructed coat made of high-quality materials will ensure the longevity of your purchase. Plum's Tobias coats are manufactured right here in Vancouver. The 3/4 length military style (shown in the first picture) is made with a lush Italian wool and nylon blend with a Kasha lining. The dense weave and lofty nature of these fabrics provide extra warmth without being overly heavy in weight. $330

But of course we know that a gal's got to have options. That's why we're pleased to offer variety in our outerwear. Our draped front style coat, made with boiled wool and a high-quality spandex lining, will suit your comfort and your style. $220

Trailblazer

Blazers have been a closet staple for years now, and Fall 2012 is no exception. So you might be eager to get in on the trend, but not so thrilled about the prospect of donning a full-on suit. Have no fear, today on the blog we'll be showing you how to style the jacket into other great outfits.

Image

Image

When you're breaking out of your suit jacket + dress pants comfort zone, styling a blazer is as easy as pairing it with your favourite coloured skinny jeans. You're welcome to my super secret industry trick, just don't spread it around too much. Finish this look off with a cute pair of boots and you're done!

The blazer is a also a great piece to build a more involved outfit around. Plum staffer Madeleine from our South Granville store started with a sheer blouse, added a denim button-down, and finished it all off with a smart tailored blazer. By using different textures and fabric weights, she's created depth and interest in her look while her skinny jeans keep the ensemble from feeling bulky.

Another way to wear your blazer this fall is like a light outerwear jacket. It'll smarten up any outfit that you normally would have tossed a jean or (shudder) fleece jacket over, and it's just as easy, promise! With a double-breasted jacket like this, you want to add a little bit of extra detailing to make up for what's hidden underneath. Laura Beth (staff at our White Rock location and Plum web model) used a statement necklace and a purse in oxblood, the season's hottest colour, to up the visual interest.
